Stolen car - recovering private plate from DVLA

So, the unthinkable happened. While we were sleeping, the back door was forced, keys found, and now we are minus one Mercedes Estate. Let's hope the insurers see us right....
Anyway, just a quick question in case anyone has experience here -- assuming it's gone for good, i.e. gone to Cyrus/Continent to be sold on or it's in a UK lock up about to be smashed to bits for parts, how long before the DVLA release the private plate? The only documents taken were the service history which was in the glovebox. I still have the V5 etc.

Had a similar thing this weekend. Got home and the battered old shoguns been nicked.
My plod that came to see me reckoned phone the dvla and get plate on retainer asap, while it still has an mot or if under 3 doesn't need one.
They'll issue a new v5 and a retainer for the plate, £80 iirc. They'll also issue a new tax disc for the new reg and advise you destroy previous tax disc. Woth this in mind, you should pop down to the post office and refund the tax to get a few bob back that way too.
