Trends of car enthusiasts that is.
I grew up in Carlisle and the "boy racers" (I'll admit most of us were back then) had cheap cars, little modifications unless they were cheap or free, Halfords special 1 million watt PMPO stereos with either cheapo to OK car speakers or cones nicked out of the home HIFI.
On my holidays I've definitely noticed that different areas have their own trends.
I'm in Edinburgh at the moment and last night I saw quite a few very tasty american muscle cars (plus a Capri with what sounded like a small block Chevy in it). Up round the north east I saw a lot of sleepers looking very rough but going better than they had any right to.
Last time I was in Leeds there were loads of M5s/M3s/RS4s treating the place like a race track. (friend of mine up there said most people got their money from drug dealing)
Back in good old Carlisle they still seem to be using your sort of "average" car and putting accessories on it (bigger wheels, zorsts, ICE).
Anyone else noticed this?

When I moved to the Sussex Coast (near Brighton) nearly 3 years ago there was a definite trend of jap cars around here. Never seen so many R33 GTSTs out and about before moving here. High concentration of classic shape Imprezas as well (I know it's probably the same in a lot of places but just seem more here).
If it's not a jap car, then it seems to be an E36 of some description (again, common everywhere but very popular around here)

Round here theres a lot of Discos / Range Rovers with added "mud bits" for greenlaning or whatever they do. Quite a lot of "chavvy" little hatchbacks too.
When I lived in Sutton Coldfield, they seemed to be all very "trendy" driving around in identical little new style hatches or Audi TTs etc.
All it says to me is about location and wealth / willingness to get credit

Get alot of those around Telford too.Imports and BMWs are very popular here. Down in Swansea it just seems to be a sea of Renault Clios and 106s. Most of which are bashed up with bumpers half hanging off them.

I live near Luton, once a big Vauxhall factory. So lots of Vauxhall workers (and ex-workers). Vauxhalls are common.
In Oxford you have the MINI factory, so lots of MINI's about and other BMW's as employees have them as company cars or by other schemes that make them more appealing.
More local still, the town I live in has only 2 main dealer. Kia and Suzuki. So around the local area both of these makes of cars are popular.
I'm from the North East but I spent a lot of time in St Neots and Port Carlisle as a teenager.
The trend round "my manor" was more old basic Fords and Vauxhalls with Halfords bits glued to them.
St Neots had more wealth and the kids there were knocking around in slammed Uno Turbos, Nova GTe's with performance orientated mods and silly ICE systems.
Once you get past the Subaru agricultural type vehicles around Port Carlisle, the locals were running around in Viva's, Mk2 Escorts and the most interesting car I saw outside the Hope & Anchor pub was...
...a white Mk1 Escort estate with the inspiral carpets cow painted on the bonnet with Cool As F**k written underneath. Quality.

As opposed to working in sales, marketing, law and finance which Leeds has a lot of? 
Truth be told, a lot of the higher end BMW's and Audis in and around Leeds will be registered in Bradford where it's parent's money AND what your friend stated

I live a few miles north of Brighton and I see loads of Imprezas. I mostly see E46's though stil loads of E36's. I suppose if the factory has a "family and friends" car purchase scheme going for 10 or so years the cars bought cheaply would be "handed down" to the kids (hah, I'm 45 so kids means anything 25 or under

This friend of mine owns a paint shop and is always doing little and big jobs for the local "gangstas", custom resprays (can you respray my car an redo the seats in yellow leather wiv my name in them?), delocking, etc. From his description most of these people make treacle look like water so I'm guessing marketing, law and finance aren't their ideal vocations.
