My build is making progress and I've just ordered my next batch of parts from the factory. I bought the rack / column, but stopped short of buying the boss / wheel, as I'd like a removable one.

The factory no longer supply a compliant removable boss and don't know of any.... how about everyone here? Has anyone tracked / used down a compliant boss?

The obvious alternative is to put a std one on,then swap after testing, but if I can get a compiant one now, then I'd like to do so.

Cheers! Mark

better off just buying a cheap non removable one for the test, then change after.

A removable steering wheel boss will not pass IVA just as adjustable brake bias wouldn't.

Where abouts in the IVA manual does it say you can't have a removable wheel?

I would have thought a lockable removeable wheel ok, but not a normal quick release as you could remove it while driving>>

best stick bolt on wheel then add removeable afterwards and enjoy the wheel closer to you... It a great improvement.

According to the factory, their previous supplier of compliant bosses stopped making them with the relevant "E" certifications to pass IVA and they didn't look for an alternative. I shall find myself a wheel that I like and buy it with a static and snap off together.

I had a snap off in my Atom and it was a great anti-theft device, so as I'm building an aeroscreened Can Am, same logic applies.

I think the brake bias is safety issue, in the eyes of IVA..... we're not trustworthy to adjust our brakes on the move safely wink

I may be wrong but I think there is a requirement for a deformable section of the steering column to protect the driver in the case of an impact. On the factory supplied column this is the wheel boss. A quick release mechanism replaces this boss.

I think this will cause an IVA failure.

Can the deformable section not be fitted between the release hub and the wheel? I assumed this is how it would be mounted.

Mark: I have a removable steering wheel and to tell you the truth if I had the opportunity to build another GTR that's one of a very few things I would leave out. I am 6'2'' and whether the wheel is in or out has no impact on ingress or egress save your money and spend it on something else. Just a thought, Lee

confused

I bought one of these from the factory about 9 months ago from memory, so does that mean that my boss is not compliant? (He isn't in all other respects! laugh)

Can only go by what the factory told me yesterday.... They said they sold compliant ones in the past, but couldn't get them any more. I@d say if you got it from them, then you should be compliant.

I'll have a punt around and see what I can find on the web.

As I've said I want a removable wheel for safety, not to ease entry / exit..... what make / model of boss did you use on your car?

this is what I have too and it is just perfect and I have the wheel sticking out 40mm more because of the stalk setup.
So in my case +40mm crush zone and then factory quick release. And I am a big guy !
Wonder how you can drive the car if the wheel is almost 12 cm more away ?

I completely agree. In our pitstops one driver get out then the other gets in in under 5 seconds with the wheel in place (however doing the belts up are an entirely different matter!)

We did go for the removable wheel however, as it is a major advantage if you need to do anything under the dash/footwell area - its next to impossible to get under there from the driver's side with the wheel in place.

That's the one I have but I removed the crush zone boss. I think they are from Mountney.

What you forget Jonny is that some of us Ultima owners are a little more rotund and elderly than you so we need all the help we can get to get in and out!!!
