What cheap car for my mum?

My Mum is currently coming to the end of her Lease deal on her Panda.

At the moment her business is not doing to well, so can't afford a new car.

With her birthday next week and me forgetting mothers day I'd like to buy her a car.

I'd like to spend £2k MAX, round £1k would be nice.

She only drive 5/6 miles a day to work and the only passenger she normally has is a medium sized dog.

I'm looking for something which isn't the usual, reliable, reasonable running costs, not a boring eco box, she loves my Elan so I was thinking of a MX5?

How does something like this look?

How about a VW Lupo or Audi A2? I always think they look good!

If the seller is declaring rust in the advert, then budget for new arches and sills. Find a rust-free one, plenty out there. If she can live with the impracticalities and meagre mpg then a sorted one would be a good choice for an alternative everyday drive.

For £1k it would be a shed. The A2 and Lupo sold in small numbers when new and are in demand on the used market, so fetch quite good money.

You can get a far nicer Mx5 for under £2k than the one you posted. Look on autotrader.

Just looked they've actually got quite cheap http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2011... and have hardly changed over the years so still basically the same as a new one.
