Signs of clutch on way out

Rose to the bait of an oik on Sat night and dropped the clutch at 6000 on my 996.
For about a second, revs held, but no fwd movement.

Could have been wheelspin, but thought I would have heard or felt that.
On other cars I've had, the signs of clutch wear have been slippage at max torque going up hills, and this car has done none of that.

Is there a way to tell of impending financial woe?

Yes. Drop the clutch at 6000rpm. If nothing happens for a second or two then..........

If you can't stall it in 3rd then the clutch is well gone.

not neccessarily, the 996 has such big fat tyres that its possible if you didnt dump the clutch that you just burnt it.

put the handbrake on and try pulling off in second, if if it stalls the clutch is probably fine

Sorry, i meant stall with the aid of the handbrake.

No slip noticeable - first time I've ever been glad to stall a car

Maybe it was wheelspin after all.

Regarding the driveshafts - if sidestepping the clutch at 6 is not it, what is the best getaway method in a c2?

HOw many miles has the 996 done on this clutch ? It is not unusual for clutches to need to be replaced from 30,000 onwards especially if you make a habit of dumping the clutch from 60000 rpm !!
