i was thinking installing this too my 97 chim, i remember there being a post on here a while ago but cant remember if there was any mention of cost, can anyone tell me how much the system cost to be supplied, fitted and mapped please? im assuming the cost of mapping is the same regardless of any mods done? dulford have squeezed 252bhp out my 400 with a stealth cam and other bits and pieces, (it was 218 before so well done dulford lol), would i see an extra increase in power/torque or would it just give me better drivablity? dulford quoted me roughly 2 grand, any better offers?

Try here Andy.
Cost depends if your going to do it your self or have someone else do the install.
Tuning can be done on the road if you have a wideband Lambda sensor fitted.

It should be around £800-1000 if you do it yourself which is more than possible and there is plenty of people on here who can assist,
I would have thought you can get better quotes than Dulfords, but what I would ask them is how much experience they have in the setup and tuning as it is a little bit of a black art to get the very best of it. And as for the gains, my 500 when from 262bhp to 305bhp, but its not just the top end gains its all over drive and response which has improved.

interesting responses, i probably wouldnt have a clue where to start to do it myself so maybe i should ask other garages, racing green maybe? ADYW, did you have any other upgrades before hand? i didnt think there could be that sort of gain, thats impressive, i guessed as mine has been well tuned any way, i may not get much more?

£1000's seems a bit steep...

So far i have built up my edis kit with new wiring loom and its cost £200...
Megasquirt 2 from ebay (build yourself) £160 (£250 ready made)
add lamda sensors and some patience and finally a rolling road session...

Download all the wiring diagrams and keep studying them...it becomes clear the more you look at them.

i know there are other gotchas but loads of people have them so they can help...!

from what I remember
£300 for ecu
£160 for LC-1 wideband
£150 for coil packs and edis 8
general wire £30
£30 idle valve
Trigger wheel and sensor £30
£30 wideband sensor welded into exhaust
£90 HT leads
then with RR session

You can do it yourself I never even changed a spark plug when I did mine and it as easy as it looks and all info on the net adn pleanty of people to help.
As for gains, the only other mod I had done between the RR readings was a 72mm plenum.

EFI Extras supply second hand coil packs and Leads but tested.I got my Megasquirt fitted and rolling roaded for around £400 .Problem is every one has there own idea of tunning the engine..it made 333bhp but the Spark advance was prity flat so i got it sorted at V8D.Now making just under 340bhp and it is much faster through the gears.. I managed to get over £250 for all the old parts removed from the car...AFM, leads ,dizzy etc

Andy, be sure to compare like for like.

Dulford fitted the V8D PlugNPlay version (fuel and spark) to mine which is £1250 to start with.

A wideband lambda and controller adds another £160 ish.

So allowing for a few ancilliary items you're up to around £1500 for parts alone if you go the V8D PnP route.

That leaves around £500 for fitting by Dulfords inc Dyno tuning which isn't a huge amount really.

Oh and just to be clear, they certainly know what they are doing with the Megasquirt - ask Richard about my car wink

so i guess u are the right guy i should talk to.what mods did u do to ur 400??as where i live we dont have much others engine to start with.we do have some 4.6 rover though.i plan to change the cam very soon after my clutch.now i do have custom exhaust from front to back,ACT elbow+K&N filter,ACT carbon trumpets and thats all.what the most important part u had fit that really made a big difference on how ur car drives????tks for ur reply

Totally agree...but the OP said Megasquirt not PnP which is a much more expensive setup....megasquirt is £160 as a kit or £250 built (ebay) not £1250... ;-)

I bought my kit off Phil.
+ a set of Moroso leads from V8D + a techedge wideband from triggerwheels.
Ive made up a coilpack bracket myself.

My intention was to have Dale at Bailey motorsport in Telford to finish the fitting, wire in properly and map on his RR.

I know Dale can supply the full kit, fit and map for a very reasonable price but as he only works there part time he would need the car for at least 2 weeks.

I just have an engine to fix first rolleyes

Ive had a stealth cam airflow meter, hydrolic lifters, smooth bore hoses, new chip magnicore leads carbon trumpets and rolling road, im sure there was a couple of other bits as well, but not in a position to dig out the reciept, it seems to pull much stronger the higher the revs cos of the cam i would think, still shunts a bit, no idea why, i assumed the re map would resolve that, hence why im looking at different ecu options, regarding the mega squirt, thanks for comments chaps! very helpful

Hi,
the true cost varies a lot depending on what options you want and how much work your willing to put in yourself and how much work you want others to do for you.
An MS2 ECU that can directly fire 4 coils (Im not talking EDIS) so you get an 8cy wasted spark configuration MS2-Extra ECU
Air Temperature Sensor with connector.
Wiring loom (1m long)
36-1 crank wheel (Designed for Rover V8 as shown)
Crank Sensor Bracket for RV8
Crank Sensor (Brand New)
Crank Sensor connector (Brand New)
Coil Packs x 2 (Brand New Ford Gen 2)
Coil Pack connectors (Brand New)
Tuning Software
RS232 Comms Cable
CD with manuals specifically designed around the MS2-Extra ECU as well as drawings for the Rv8, etc.

This all works out at £615.

Youll need to make the loom up from your old one or from new connectors, say £100 for new connectors.
Add a set of HT leads and make a bracket for the coil packs.
Thats everything you need as far as I can remember.
If you want to buy a complete loom all built for the Rv8 to connect to the MS then these are somewhere around £300 from V8D

As far as tuning goes, if you want to do it yourself youll need a wideband lambda £150 or you can simply get someone like V8D, Dulford or Bailey performance to tune it for you. I have no idea of that cost, but as someone has said £500 I would say thats a fair price.

So where are we now, £615 for a basic kit of bits, £100 - 300 for a loom (could use old one and modify it for no cost) £150 - £500 for tuning, plus a set of HT leads.
So roughly £800 - £1800 would be a realistic cost depending on how much work you wanted to do, that would give you fully mappable fuel and ignition (wasted spark)

I went for a fuel only system from V8 developments. Easy to fit yourself and easily reversaible if you have any problems. The system can also be upgraded to include ignition mapping if required in the future.

http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a... PnP (fuel only) - Up and Running &mid=74044

I spent about £180 on mapping on the dyno which is a good starting point but it still needs tweeking.

Next job is to fit a wide band sensor, to save on further mapping costs.

still haven't decided whther to upgrade to coil packs over the winter.

yeah im not sure what options dulfords were quoting for, but he was thinking and seemed to be totting lots up in his head, however it still seems expensive, thanks for your help guys, ill try and get it more itemised and maybe a bit more realistic if i go ahead with it, im still upset at the daewoo he gave me to drive around in while my diff is being looked at, the bleeding speedo dont work and its an auto, oh well, it goes and i'm grateful :-), it sounded really dodgy though the other day, so i thought i best get it looked at lol

Its still cheaper than paying £400 for a chip with a guess map and then £600 to £1000 for rolling road re map,and you still have the old dizzy and AFM..

Speak to emerald , they do ecus fly looms and do special rate Dyno set up , they are very good guys and very very helpful , the ecu will do lots of stuff as well , remember to price up the rolling road in the price ,

If it takes £600-1000 to perfect a map that is in all probablility about 95% right from the off (given that the fueling requirements of the ol' RV8 are actually quite relaxed) on the RR, I'd shudder to think what sort of money it would take to take a car on any sort of aftermarket management - let alone MS - to OE-levels of driveability and at least MOT-levels of emissions compliance in all driving conditions you are likely to encounter - £100,000? rofl

In my world, it works like this:

Customer upgrades car, I get Mark Adams to make chip for his specific configuration - he's mapped about 3,000 RV8s in all states of tune so unless you have specified a bespoke cam at some point that no one knows anything about or have done very weird things with the head ports, he'll pretty much know what it will do. Cost £400-odd.

Customer installs upgrades plus chip and has a perfectly driveable car from the off (if not, they've probably got an air leak somewhere - the one time I've had that happen was from a faulty valley gasket that came with the camshaft replacement kit). He can then go to a RR within 6 months of installing the chip. Based on the actual A/F readings, Mark Adams provides a chip with revised mapping at no cost if at all necessary.

Customer decides to further upgrade the car. Mark Adams provides a new chip to suit his new configuration, at nominal cost (think two figures).

A rather far cry from your £600-1000 don't you think? smile

Nothing wrong with having an AFM either (personally I'd never rely on a MAP sensor and TPS alone) - it's just that the hole in the one that came with your engine is a bit small. wink

I agree about having mapped ignition, however the cost/benefit ratio varies from engine to engine. Sometimes you can achieve 80% of the gains by recurving the distributor, sometimes it's fine as it is with changes to the ignition curve returning fairly minimal gains on one end of the power graph. It's not a clear cut thing by all means... smile

Years ago when I ran rover motor I tried chipped ecus ( it was a mark Adams one) and it was good enough but you were stuck with a dizzy that had crisp advance curves and cross fire problems , and I went aftermarket ecu and have never looked back since as you can run all sort of advance where you want them not waiting for weights to do it for you , if you use emerald he does a cheap Dyno set up , done by the people who make it and do the software . And if you change anything it's cheap to re do , I would not pay big money for a " chip " or if you do get a before and after on s Dyno there and then to see what you have got for your money . If you are running higher compression make sure the dizzy will cope without running retarded ignition to stop det , as it will make more power in places but det in others ! Can't sort that with a dizzy .

Your in dream landlaughI agree he is an expert but if your not happy with the best guess map it will cost you £600 to a £1000 ..You have to pay for rolling road time other mechanics to check over the engine and the Guru.
I know people who have gone back the next day costing even more ..It can take over a year just to see him..So the way i look at it you have paid £400 for a 25p chip ,this should be deducted off the remap cost..because the best guess map was not close enough ..All good things come to a end..Only having one person who can remap the 14cux in the country is not healthy ..You can buy the plug and play to start with and adjust it at any time for mods..engine upgrades etc etc
