Tyre question.
Discussion
Is it illegal to use a tyre over a certain age?
I'm asking as I was 'advised' that I'd have had the book thrown at me for a couple of the tyres on one of my <ahem> rolling stock as they were over 6 years old but I can't see anything physically wrong with them. In fact they look in perfect condition. actually.

There's no legal implication - providing there's no damage to it such as exposed cords etc as per the parameters set out by the MOT.
General advice is to replace any tyre that is over 10 years old. More importantly, you shouldn't use a tyre after about 6 years if it hasn't already been used.
It's ridiculous when you think about it, as the stopping distance of old tyres can be well past that of a tyre below the legal tread depth limit.

Often on low miler cars and Campervans...the tyres "age" and the sidewalls show signs of perishing and they get the great reject note at an MOT... I have a Campervan that I use daily and don't suffer that problem but I know many that have low mile campers that do 2-3,000 miles per year that have to have a full set of tyres after 3-4 yrs from new....same applies to low miler cars too....if you keep the tyres in contact with the ground taking the weight of the vehicle...just a few thoughts from me...... So the answer is to raise the vehicle if long term stationary like my pals '72 Abarth Fiat 500 that overwinters in his garage....
