Euro trip - Stelvio to Davos help please!!
Discussion
I'm off on a my eurotrip very soon GOOGLE MAPS LINKY OF ROUTE, just wondering if someone could confirm which was the road out of the Top Gear best roads that they actually drove along?
Obviously I've extensively google mapped the area, but without actual road names its rather difficult to tell which is the best one.
If anyone could help it would be brilliant!
ETA: If anyone knows any other driving roads along the way that would also be appreciated massively.

We stayed in Bormio too but i've slightly modded your route as the road the other side of Stelvio although part gravel is absolutely wonderful and traffic free.

Sorry to interrupt but I'm doing a journey shortly from Fussen in Southern Germany down to the Stelvio Pass and from there back into Germany to go to Trier. Akinda V shaped drive with Stelvio at the bottom and Trier at the top left of the V. Are you saying that the best approach to the Pass is via the road from Davos (as Top Gear did) or via the SS38 heading for Bormio?
All help gratefully accepted.

We went davos to livigno recently on our way to stelvio and we went through the coolest tunnel in the world, its really low and its single lane and the sound was epic, its over 2miles long. far side of it is the italian border. Costs 12euro per car but well worth it

I thought you were asking a trick question?....
Looking at your 1st image, then the map, count the number of hairpins in the 1st image, look at map... I'd say you'd be haeding AWAY from Bormio on the SS38.
Happy to be corrected, but I can not see that heading towards Bormio would have anywhere near that many hairpins in that distance on the map.

Thats what I'd think as well but its vital I get this right so need a definitive answer.Looking at your 1st image, then the map, count the number of hairpins in the 1st image, look at map... I'd say you'd be haeding AWAY from Bormio on the SS38.

You will need to head away from Bormio at the top of the pass to get the shot above.
It is a superb road despite what some on here say, it might be a little slow and you might get stuck behind a cyclist/motorhome but there are some superb views and some cracking hairpin turns.
Going back towards Bormio down the other side but taking a right turn over the border and you'll find the most amazing road/gravel combo of sweeping open bends and hairpins with massive unprotected drops. Driving bliss and very, very quiet unlike the Stelvio. Do both and you'll spend the day with a massive smile on your face.
Just follow the SS38 from the top of the Stelvio pass towards Bormio (North West) and turn off to the right onto the Umbrailpass, there is a small border post as you cross into Switzerland but we didn't get stopped or checked there.
Stay on the Umbrailpass until the end and it'll spit you out onto the '28 which leads all the way to the Ski town of Davos.
It was gravel in places through the trees but it's hard packed so won't damage the car. Great fun, my perfect driving road.

As Andy says, that's definitely away from Bormio and I'll be there next Wednesday night staying at the Folgore at the top of the pass. TBH though, odds are that you will be sorely disappointed. I've driven that route 4 of the last 5 years and every time it's full of pushbikes, campers and coaches.
Yeah...TBH I'm hearing that more & more over the last few days which is disappointing. However, I've googled his suggestion of the Umbrailpass and I am intrigued...a lot...so if I get to the pass and its slow going I can hang a left and give it a go.Gonna mark it (Umbrailpass) as a favourite on my Tom Tom ready for when I get out there.
