Had a test drive and bought (see General TVR Stuff and Gossip) a late 2000 4.5LW on the weekend. I noticed a rattle on trailing throttle. It seemed to come from within the steering column, about 6 inches behind the steering wheel air vent. It sounded like a small piece of vibrating trim or metal. On balanced throttle or under acceleration the noise disappears. Does anybody know what this is? The salesman knew what I was talking about and said it was some kind of valve / solenoid but would need the mechanic to explain it to me on Tuesday. The important thing is he thinks there is nothing that can be done about it…..bugger!

So is this a common thing to Cerberas? I don’t remember it on my last one? It’s definitely not exhaust rattle or overrun.

Cheers,

Rob

Can't say I know what the noise is from the description, but just wanted to
say how delighted I am to see you back with a Cerbera.

I hope you have all the fun you should have had before.

I recently have heard a 'rattle' or something thing similar on my cerbie...thought something was loose and was vibrating around the driverside dash area..sounds just like what you have described...but then disappeared...seems to have gone!..was a tad worried that what ever was vibrating had fallen off but cant see anything...but then again once you have the window open and the engine singing, you dont hear anything than V8 music anyway!!

it's just the brake servo one way valve .. most 4.5 cerbies do it, 4.2s cos if their blance-pipe inlet manifold don't

Cheers for the quick replies.

Joospeed, sorry, don't quite understand what your saying RE the 4.2's...why don't they do it? Is there anything that can be done? It is really going to get on my nerves!

If its continuous, then somethings not right, but if now and again.... then its normal... its a pressure valve working and doing its job....

when it doesnt make the noise, thats when you should be worried...

Everytime I put my Cerbera in for some sort of fix it comes back with a new rattle.

Had the car in for a few bits and bobs recently and I now have a new rattle that seems to be coming from behind the passenger side of the dash. Sure as heck wasn't there before.

Don't tell me - "they all do that Sir".

Have a look in the top of the passenger footwell... most probably a loose ECU....

Cheers SXS,

So why did TVR put it where it could be heard? Is there anything I can do about it? I bloody hate rattles, I'm sure I would have heard this if it was on my old 4.5LW, so is there a chance it had a differnt / silent valve?
