I'm sorry, 'what car'

Right,

After deliberating over if i want a 5 series or not i've decided to broaden my choices.

Criteria:

Budget: ~£13k

Must be comfortable, i'm after some luxurious but not something that says i've went over the hill in life.

I can do around 18k a year, so probably a better idea to go derv.

Must have as many toys as possible. A decent stereo set up would be high on this list. As is bluetooth.

So, guide me PH - what do i want?

I'd chose a 530d if I were in your shoes, but if you want some alternatives, how about:

Lexus LS
Phaeton
Volvo S80

How about a BMW 7 series

Absolutely loads of toys to play with, a very nice place to sit and not too bad on fuel.

Can't remember when they introduced the V6 TDi, but that shouldn't be too bad. Can't imagine it'd be any worse than keeping a BMW 7-Series to the same standard.

Personally I'd be thinking 5 Series derv too. Or possibly a 330D for something a bit more sporting.

I'd personally recommend an E320 cdi, your budget will get you a sub 50k mile FMBSH fully loaded car with a wonderful engine, great ride, reliability and every toy you'll need.

But, will you be able to deal with others telling you it's an old man's car and the 5 series is sportier/cooler?

You're overlooking a great option if you can't at least look past that and consider it

I love these too. Neatly gets around the OP's criteria that he "doesn't want an old man's car".

Pity they're so much more expensive than the E class on which they're based.

You are all wrong , the lexus gs450 h is what you need , if image wasn't a problem obviously . You have no idea how fast this car is and you can have a petrol instead if diesel

You should get a really nice 530D for that. My mate bought a high miler for £10k and it is immaculate with all the toys, quick and pretty good on economy too.

I could't get along with my 530d, it was just too boring and un-inspiring inside. At least spend a fair bit of time in one, if you'e inclined that way.

I'm much happier in my XJ diesel, like the silver one above, although the standard stereo is not so good.
