"Never swerve for animals". (Dad said).

My wifes first driving instructor told her to "just creep out at junctions, someone will eventually stop and let you out". She sacked him and found a new one.

Something from Stirling Moss, early in my driving career. It was to be smooth.

My dad used to randomly quiz me to give the colour of the car behind (without looking) to get me into the habit of checking my rear-view regularly. It stuck, I can still do it today.

Treat every other road user like a blind, incompetent idiot and if someone wants your bit of road just let them have it.By my Dad.

(no offence to blind people whom i dont regard as incompetent or idiots)

So if there are no Police around near a School/Playground/Built up area or just out of respect for local residents in a speed restricted area it is acceptable to speed?

I had the same as the above guy from my old man.

Treat everyone else on the road like they're an idiot.

and...

Always look beyond the end of your bonnet.

Both are good advice and have seen me good.

get smooth then get fast.

reading the road can give you momentum. if you don't have power, this is useful.

treat others as though there's a price on your head, but never take it personally.

"Don't just look at the car directly in front, look as the cars in front as far as you can."

"when cornering, look to see how fast the kerb on the outside edge is appearing, this indicates how tight the corner is."

Oh nearly forgot the best one and it is really corny, many years ago i watched "Days of Thunder" the day after i was competing at Thruxton in the CCC handicap race that ran alongside the Speed championship.During practice out the back of the circuit i let a very fast Sierra Cosworth pass me on the inside(Lesley Beerling was the driver as i recall)as he passed me he lost it and span right in front of me at high speed, loads of smoke ensued and i poo'ed myself, all i could think of was the advice given to Mr Cruise in the film "head for the smoke 'cos the car will be gone when you get there".I can say it works.

Doesn't that depend on whether the speed you consider reasonable under the circumstances is above or below the speed limit? The fact that you are going to ignore the speed limit in choosing an appropriate speed doesn't necessarily mean that you will exceed it...

Slow in fast out.
Assume all other drivers are idiots and never assume what they are going to do unless they do it.
