bored of car! advise please

I have been getting increasingly bored of my mazda 6 mps, its quickish and nice inside but I find its not quite fast enough to be fun and handling isn't involing enough as its too light steering and too heavy a car to be nimble and too wobbly to feel connected! The brakes are a bit pants; they faded hard on me the other day with a little back road use and I had my son in the car so it really wasn't too hard a drive!
So I am thinking £425 a year tax , £800 insurance and 20mpg and £170 a month on payments, I think I would be wise getting rid of it! It's not a bad car just not a fun sports car and as it's only a weekend toy, its pointless.
The idea was the other half would drive it when she passes her test but she doesn't want such a big powerful car.
My thinking is, as I have a company car, I use that most of the time and get the other half a golf or corsa or something she wants for minimal budget and get me something fun!
Now as its rarely used and so on I was thinking a classic or future classic! Cheap insurance, cheap maintenance and cheap tax.
My next door neighbour has a nice conditon porcshe 924 2 litre n/a for sale for £500 and its in good conditon with tax and plenty of m.o.t!
Now do you think it will be fun enough or will the novelty wear off as its pretty slow or the fact its a nice balanced sports car will see me smiling?
Also does anyone have any comments or info on the 924's and also how are engine upgrades from say the 2.5 944 done?

£500 for a 924? Go for it , presuming it drives okay and you used your experience to check it out first. And after 3mths when you crave more power, then strip out the rear seats, carpets, radio, add a roll cage and get someone to breathe on the engine... another grand should see it sorted into something a bit more lively. Put some flared arches and bonnet scoops for the real retro effect:
The 924 is rwd and quite well balanced car, its in good conditon as its my mates are and I have seen what's been done and its been driven without fault for the last year and a bit!

and she wants a cheap car which has a bit of space and fun to drive but ideally has 5 doors and cost no more than a grand
What I do have planned was the 924 for me as its classic running costs and cheap to buy and I have rover 220 tomcat n/a that needs brake pads and a suspension bush sitting around and get that on the road for now for her!
Until we get a nice 5 door car

Similar situation last year, my diverse short list was
BMW e36, RWD, nice balance, 4 doors, lots about, variety of flavours from tame to hot sub £1k for sure.
FIAT Coupe 20v (Turbo), 2 doors, lots of space, epic pace, great handling, frightening wallet emptying potential, some sub 1k's about but buy with care.
Ford Puma, FWD, 3 Door, very chuckable, quicker than you expect, nearly 40mpg, cheap to service.

I'm in a similar position, my wee boy is 5 months old and finding a fun car wasn't easy.
I have a mk4 golf 5 door gt tdi for my wife. Its crap but economical.
For knocking about during the week i have a suzuki ignis sport. I cant recomend these enough! 40+ mpg all day long, great handling,chuckable,good brakes and quick enough to be a hoot to drive. If it was my only car I'd still love it. Also fits a baby seat in the back plus a pram in the boot.
For weekends i have a Fiat coupe 20valve turbo. See the plus points in one of the posts above then add the facts that you can fit a baby seat in the back and a pram in the boot. Mpg on a run is not too bad either :-)

surely the 15mpg yuo might gain on the ignis is outweighed by the tax + insurance unless you do loads of miles/really love the ignis tooadycav said:
