Devin townsend and related stuff, any fans?

until last summer, i had never heard of Devin Townsend, and had only a vague familiarity with strapping young lad, but since the Devin Townsend Project at bloodstock last year i have been absolutely hooked.

so are there any other fans of Strapping young lad, Ocean machine, Devin townsend band, Devin townsend project etc kicking around?

good lord yes! i've been a fan of his for about 6 years now. i started with strapping young lad their albums city, heavy as a realy heavy thing and alien blew me away and tore me a 2nd ahole all at the same time. I couldnt believe what a contrast DTB and DTP are to syl, some utterly beautiful and epic music, deadhead being a fav of mine from the accelerated evolution album, i'd love to see him live in any of his outfits, preferably somekind of syl/dtb joint tour, we can but hope

I saw him live at Hammersmith with Steve vai on the sex and religion tour in the mid 90's, he was pretty outrageous, I was in the front row for that gig! I must admit I haven't heard any of his work since then.

SYL is probably my favourite band and Devin is an absolute legend - one of the most talented musicians I've ever heard.

I love his solo stuff. Synchestra and Terria are amazing records. The opening of Synchestra (Let It Roll and Hypergeek) is truly incredible.

Deadhead - what a great song!

Only listened to his Infinity album the other day as it goes. Got into some of the SYL stuff too after hearing a couple of tracks on the old Metal Hammer cover discs. Underneath The Waves was a particular favourite (although my parents didn't share my enthusiasm when forced to listen to it at a squillion decibels )

i dont think i could pick a favorite album; ive listened to them all many many times and im yet to get bored of any.

cannot wait to see DTP again this year, im going to be there front row centre singing along at the top of my lungs

He definitely has a great sense of humour and this shows through in the music and stage performance and is a vital part of which IMO. This doesn't change the fact that he is a musical genius though.

i think this sums up what makes devin townsend so good though of course SYL were more of the former, and solo stuff the latter

Not blown away by his albums from "Ki" and beyond, they have been pretty uninspired imo, but "Infinity", "Terria", "Synchestra" and "Accelerated Evolution" are some of the best albums of all time.

Bit of a thread resurrection.

I've been listening to DT/SYL even since someone posted a live video of 'Aftermath'. Thought he was great, something different, had Gene Hogan on drums, and obviously very talented.

Bought 'Addicted - by a thread' album the other day which is great great and right up my street.
He has some fantastic musicians working with him on his live set.

I've been listening to some of his newer albums recently, still convinced they aren't a patch on his earlier stuff. The songs just aren't as powerful, and from a production point of view, the tones aren't as good either. I listen to something like "Earth Day" or "Storm" and think "Why doesn't he just knock them out like this?".

Still, an immensely talented musician and composer, no doubt about that. I once tuned one of my guitars in the open C major tuning that he uses, that was a hoot. So easy to play major scalar runs on it, and riffs sound so damn heavy. In a way, I have massive respect for him just for sticking with open C major tuning as opposed to a standard tuning, because learning to play in a new tuning like that is like an entirely new way of playing guitar, and he has used it as a springboard to make some of the best music I've ever heard. Mind you, he's done some of the worst with it it. "Ki" - urgh, what a mess that whole thing was. I was so excited for that album too!

Very much enjoy the addicted album, Anneka works really well with him I think. Also a big syl fan.

He is however, completely batst. Which probably explains why his music is so different.
