Dyslexia diagnosis?

After reading the thread about helping an adult with dyslexia, i was wondering if any one can advise me on arranging a dyslexia test for myself.

Can you go through your gp or do you need to contact one of the dyslexia organisations?

my problem is not so much with reading or writing, altho i tend not to read books that much and can find it difficult to get stuck into a book. I've always had difficulty getting whats in my head down on paper so to speak. struggled a bit at school with it and my hand writing isn't great. I also seem to have a poor attention span, i can just switch off during group conversations sometimes and am very easily distracted, my fiance say's i'm like a magpie "oooh shiny thing". I can also be quite disorganised, forever misplacing keys, wallet, tools etc. I believe these can be symptoms of dyslexia or similar.

can anyone offer me an advice?

If you visit your local LearnDirect centre - there's one in every town - you'll be able to talk to one of their basic / key skills advisors there for free. They should be able to run a DAST test (dyslexic adult screening test) on you for free, which acts as an indicator of dyslexic tendencies. If the score is sufficiently low, they may have access to grants to be able to get a proper educational psychologist test you properly - they cost about £400. The ed psych will be able to help you find coping strategies to improve the way you organise your stuff / improve your reading.

I do this sort of thing in the military - we get a lot of dyslexic marines, as they've struggled with school but remain motivated to do something non-academic.

OP,
If you wrote that post yourself without assistance, then you definitely don't have dyslexia.
What it DOES read like, to my untrained eye, is something on the mild autism spectrum, like ADD.
Might be worth doing some reading up around that, and doing the associated tests.
