jaguar s type, any help for a new owner please?
Discussion
My wife has just bought a 200 "V" plate 3ltr v6 se, the car is nice and clean and drives ok, however, there 3 things ive noticed tonight
1. when ever you lift of the throttle, the cars gives a little noise that is best described as a whoooooop sound...
2. idle is a little bit hunting, howver once clutch is prssed down,m the car sits perfectly at a steady rev
3. while giving it a little bit of a test, in 4th gear at quite high speed the traction control light flashed and you could feel a power cut for the time the light flashed. then at the lights, there was a bit of smoke / steam no real smell though and temp was perfectly normal.
the car while smooth and quiet, has to be said, does not feel anywhere near as lively as i would have expected from such a large motor, so does this car need a service or are they not a car that performance is part of the joy?
still, after reading the above, my wife is in love with the car, and it is nice to drive, despite my son counting how many times i stall it, i just cant hear the bloody thing lol

I had a 2001 3.0SE (auto) and it didn't do any of those things up to 150K miles when I sold it.
As for performance, Jags are heavy cars not hot hatches; much of the power is used in shifting the metal. However once you get going they should romp past most things.
I hope you get it fixed and welcome to Jaguar

Did you not investigate the service history before purchase? If not get it to a reputable indy now and tell them to give it a thorough check. As for performance, Jags are heavy cars not hot hatches; much of the power is used in shifting the metal. its got a good history, but not been used very much of late, just short country road journeys a few miles each wayAs for performance, Jags are heavy cars not hot hatches; much of the power is used in shifting the metal. However once you get going they should romp past most things.

This bit would worry me the most:

I can only compare it with mine; I'm not a mechanic so can't tell you which bit to poke. But what you say is defo not right; therefore if it bothers you get it fixed for peace of mind if nothing else.Doesn't sound like mine that's for sure. I agree - get a good indy to look at it and put it on the diagnostic machine. Chances are it will be some kind of electronic malfunction. By the way, is it a manual? I thought all SE's were auto.
I also think that cars which are not driven regularly, and when they are driven, only pootle around within their ageing owners' comfort zone, get very sluggish. That has been true of cars from time immemorial. See after you get the indy to check it, take it out and give it a proper leathering.
Something else, if you run it on low fuel, the fuel pressure sensor will not work properly.

What mileage has the car done; I appreciate you say later that it has a good history, but when were things like plugs/filters etc changed? What are the tyres like, what was the road surface like when the traction control kicked-in, ie poor tyres/wet/slippery surface? It might be an electrical glitch or might simply be that the tyres lost traction for a short time.1. when ever you lift of the throttle, the cars gives a little noise that is best described as a whoooooop sound...

Smoke/steam, presumably from the bonnet area? - not smoke from brakes, ie hard use or sticking caliper.
If all fluid levels are ok/clean etc., it might just need a decent run to clear it out.
They obviously aren't the quickest cars around and are a bit heavy, but it does have c240BHP, so it should at least be reasonable.
If you're not too sure about it, or fiddling around, it would be worth getting it looked at/serviced, as others have suggested.
Good luck
well guys thanks for ther tips and help. managed to sort a few out. the whooop noise, was a collapsed vacum pipe along the top of the engine, so thats now changed and there is also a split in the front water pipe from the engine to the water pump, hence the steam.....car will be bcak with me this morning, so i can try it and give it back tot the wife, who at this moment, is not the happiest ive ever seen her
