Best riding cars for reasonable outlay?

Inspired by James May's recent rants about how most modern cars are stiffly sprung, hard riding irrelevances, I was wondering what are some of the best examples that flunk this trend? When you just want to effortlessly devour miles and be insulated from the world around, what are the cars to be in? Try and focus on the lower price ranges though, we all know that comfort can be bought at a price!
I believe Rolls Royce still use the Citroen system. They certainly did.
Citroen have been the vest ride/handling combo for decades.
I still think their hydropneumatic system is the best particularly in bigger cars. It loses out in small cars rather like Hydrolastic systems (BMC)which floated and bounced excessively.
Citroen but only the hydropneumatic models the Peugeot based cheaper Citroens are no better than average.

I'd say a cheap Citroen of some kind. In my experience, the German manufacturers have never been able to beat the French at ride quality and they're getting progressively worse. I suppose an old S-class would be the closest German thing at a reasonable price.
An old Jag would do the job, too, if you can afford the fuel.
