I'm fairly sure this won't be a problem, but...

I have a 1995, factory built, kit car that I'm looking to put back on the road. It was registered on a Q-plate when new and driven up to about 2006.

I know the emissions requirements for new kits have tightened since then, but do they apply retrospectively or will I just be able to go and MOT it under the same rules (visible smoke only, I believe?) that I could in the noughties?

Should be visible smoke only.

Check the notes section 3 on the front page of the V5 as it may well state the requirements there.

That makes sense. I doubted that even the government would make hundreds of cars retrospectively illegal, but seemed worth checking as I haven't tried to tax/MOT it for ages. The morons at the post office gave me a hard enough time with the Caterham because it was on an age-related plate...

Presumably the same requirements would apply if I swapped the engine? A nice 1.6 Ford Sigma quite appeals to replace the old CVH if I keep it for any length of time. smile

Slightly on the same topic, if you put a Duratec/Zetec into a car what do you have to do about cats?

Cheers

Car emissions are based on the age of the car or the age of the engine, whichever is older smile

Emmisions have been covered a few times, like here recently... http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

Woody, MOT emmisions are always to the level the car was first registered as (or in the case of kits, as they were at SVA/IVA) even if an engine change has taken place... unless the tester gets it wrong.
