One of my exhaust end cans came off. Can I drive around with out one? I need the car right now, so can't get it fixed in the near future. Advise please!

Tried to take out the other one as well, unscrewed the bolt but still rock hard and couldn't remove the other can. Any tips of how the remove the can easily.

I wouldn't mate, might end up melting something having said that might be able to get away with a short journey.

Where are you as I have a spare can. Did you lose it? To get the old one off you need to undo the clamp then wiggle the can off, you have to be careful as you can split the welds on the box. Can be a pig, I also used a long lever to walk it off the box. Make sure you do them up, and then retighten a little bit later.

Noticed last night the bracket had snapped on one of mine so the can is a bit loose.

Should be easy enough for someone to weld back into place, right? Can they do it in situ?

One of mine came off 2 weeks ago, the welds fractured. I had no choice but to drive home, just tried to avoid the overrun - as the fuel pump sits very close to the box....you clearly dont want too many mini explosions by that... (LHS exhaust when looking at rear of car)

I am spending some time on mine this afternoon, im installing some support bands to stop it happening again.

Then im going to get the fractured side welded back up, so long as its fialry clean with no rust, and it fits back together fairly easily, should be repairable.

I have also replaced both of my can securing clamps with high quality stainless items from Car Builder Solutions, £9 each.

And the question as to how to remove easily, not much short of a bit of force im afraid. You can pry the pipe open (it has 4 leaves), and try rotating, some wd40 / penetrating fluid may also help. I had to use a rubber hammer on mine in the end...

Thanks for all your replies guys. it sounds like a common issue. Yep, the welds on the box have split. Neill, thank you for asking. No I didn't loose it. I was on my way for weekend early morning blast. A kind driver was telling me my exhaust bounced like a yo yo. I initially thought what a strange compliment for the Tuscan noise. Then I realised he meant it. So drove home slowly and kept watching the rear mirror in case the can swung off. Took it out now. Just thought if I should take the other one out for balancing the exhaust air flow.

Sounds like it is not advisable for any long and hard drive then..... banghead

Just had another look and it's not the bracket - it's cracked where the pipe goes into the silencer box.

Sounds like there has been a spate of similar failures!!

If anyone is interested, i will post pics of my solution, i have installed a stainless band and rubber cotton reel, to support the exhaust about 2/3 the way up. Its still able to move but stops the up and down shocks. It invloved drilling through the boot to support with a stainless bolt so maybe not for everyone, but i figured it would only happen again if i didnt do something!!

I'd second the advice to not drive it, I used to have a Fiat Coupe and the tail pieces were prone to rusting and falling off. A few miles of driving in that condition were enough to melt a big hole in the plastic bumper

Think turbo charged cars have ridiculously hot exhausts.

Actually the turbo removes a lot of the enthalpy from the exhaust gas, so from there back the exhaust actually runs cooler than an N/A vehicle.

Oh right, only going from past experience of my previous car. I wouldnt have been able to touch my exhaust pipe for a minimum of 10 mins after turning off the engine.

Btw, my exhaust fell off today too! Just had to drive it home - sounds bloody good actually biggrin

Either way, my coop bumper was running on the floor by the time I got it to KwikFit. Love the look of the Tuscan carbon cans by the way, one of the features of the car

I'm going to go try get it welded back on today so at least I'm able to drive the car, then try to fabricate something like you have to stop it happening again.

Is removing the rear box a no no? The Powerflow people I'm taking it to will no doubt try to tempt with the suggestion (it's not decatted - yet)

Got mine welded back on now and looks much stronger than the other side smile

As it's now fine I can see myself putting off the job of strengthening it for a while whistle
