Clutch Question re my 993 TT

Yesterday, on a straight bit of road, I accelerated fast in 3rd gear and when I changed quickly to 4th, the revs shot up with no associated acceleration. I cannot see any other normal indications of a clutch problem and as yet cannot get the car to do the same again. Am almost thinking that I missed the gear change and it was in neutral when I revved, but cannot believe i am that bad! Any comments, please!!
