Tell me about Merc C270 CDI's

Anybody know much about them? I've had some insurance quotes for the E46 320D, and also got some for the Merc (2001/2002) C Class C270 CDI which was the same amount, so thought I'd check them out.
I know they are more akin to the 330D, MPG and performance wise. I can probably live with that. Whether they are better to drive then the 320D, I have no idea?
Do they have any major issues? What sort of MPG is likely? And how do I know if the Autos are regular auto or the sequential auto I have seen listed, and what's the difference? I've noticed they actually do a manual, which is my preference. MPG starts to become much less appealing on the auto. The sequential however, is listed as being surprisingly better MPG than manual. Not sure how, but it is....

I owned a 2006 C180k, essentially the same car but from a later build period with a completely different engine - I loved mine, couldn't fault it apart from lack of oomph which is expected of a smaller 4 cylinder engine, but my car was well put together (in the age of Merc building them in South Africa) and I think that shape is ageing very well indeed.
Only issue on the C Class of the age you're thinking of may be rust as I think that may be prior to galvanised bodywork.

I've had experience of one, dont like it. huge turbo lag, really limited power band. brisk enough but not in a nice way. I'm not keen on the seating position and hate the wood effect facia on the one i've driven. It does feel RWD but in a very different way to the E46 which in my experience of a 325i, I loved. Ours suffered a lot of electronic gremlins which seemed to be difficult to diagnose by the dealer.

I had one and it was a comfy car to drive, never buy a manual or you will never sell it, watch out for any noise coming out of the gearbox,and the srs light comes on its a common fault with a switch under the drivers seat.
i had a few issues with mine like the heating element going, (i was quoted £450 just for the part) and the turbo pipe coming off,but all in all its a very good car for the money. you will get about 30 mph around town, 45-50 on a motorway cruise. its not as good as the 330d and not as good as you would expect it to be being a merc.
