Guys, any tips for the Naples airport to sorrento journey (actually Saint Agnello just outside sorrento). Going next Tuesday and I gather that a taxi is way too expensive.

Train.Cheap.Simple.Quick (relatively). Direct - be careful, some stop everywhere, but it's a relatively cheap, frequent service.

Did the trip last year by taxi: it cost €250 each way for about a 45 minute ride.

We stayed at the Tramontono: excellent hotel and we had a large balcony overlookong the Med, the Bay of Naples etc. really nice to have.

By the way, Sorrento was massively disappointing: too many cruise ships and tourists for the town to cope with. Restaurants too busy and prices sky high too: eg spag bol lunch with wine for two, €80 or so. Expect €100+ for two for an evening meal.

Can recommend the day trip to Ischia: €45 pp I seem to recall. Pompeii good too, take the train!

I also have list of what we thought were good restaurants if you want that sort of info.

All in all, the most disappointing place out of the the 7 or 8 we've been to in Italy, sorry. Just overwhelmed by tourists and too commercial therefore.

Another vote for the train - travelled back that way last year, was pretty rustic (i.e. full of noisy school kids and everything in sight is graffitied) but did the job!

If you want a little more 'luxury' there's a coach that you can catch outside the airport too which is about a tenner IIRC!

I also found it disappointingly touristy, but still enjoyable and nowhere near as expensive as suggested above - we ate average 'Italian' food (i.e. the standard things you'd find in an uninspiring restaurant in the UK) for UK prices but it wasn't special - even then we had to tell them to shove the 'tourist' menus, as they made Pizza Hut look exotic!) ...

Pompei's got to be done for sure, and Positano, Amalfi and Nerano are worth a bus trip to see for the views alone - infact the only meal that really impressed me was from a modest-looking place on the beach in Nerano where we stopped for lunch!

We rented a car from Naples airport and drove to Sorrento and around the area. It was great fun. Just make sure you get the smallest car they have - we had a Matiz and while being crap over in the UK it was perfect for the holiday/roads/parking etc.

btw, While Pompei is cool I can also recommend Herculaneum.

TBF you probably ate in far better than I did (pretty much everywhere I went was very average quality wise - I saw much classier looking establishments, but was on a budget having fallen victim to The Mental days after booking the break! biggrin)

Actually, I did find one place where the food was great and reasonably priced - I kept the card for future reference... will see if I can dig it out! smile

If you do hire a car, be careful at the toll booth on the Autostrada - they like to fleece tourists who arrive with large notes by not handing enough change back.

+1 for the tip on Herculaneum, smaller but far better preserved than Pompei - also Solfatara is worth a trip - this is what the Romans considered to be the mouth of Hades.

+1 for the train. That road tunnel is scary!

If you can squeeze onto one of the cruise boats from Sorrento around the Amalfi coast in the sunshine the views are fabulous. Ours stopped a couple of times so we could hop off for a swim.

Coach for me, right outside the airport and got us to Sorrento in about an hour and a half.

Wanted to take the Hyydrofoil for the novelty of it but it would have been too much messing around in the end.

Thanks guys, train sounds good.

We will only spend a few days in sorrento. Hotel is fairly comprehensive and in a quiet town and we intend to spend a day in capri, a day in amalfi, day in pompei etc.. So sorrento doesnt need to be th be all and end all.

Thanks for the tips though ... Any names of decent but reasonable restaurants also would be much appreciated.

just wanted to update for the purposes of anyone doing searches in the future (as I seem to do a lot of on PH)

The Carerri coach to sorrento from bang outside Naples airport was very very easy and 10E each, 5E for kids. Helpful driver and a small trickle of aircon which just about did the trick. On the way back a private transfer arranged by the hotel in an aircon Merc (but lunatic driver, amost as bad as me) was 80E

We found the food actually cheaper than the UK and very little dissapointed. We stayed in Sant Agnello just outside sorrento which was a nice quieter base to have and used tripadvisor a lot to pick restaurants, eating mainly in Moonlight, Cappano, Da Peppino (8E-18E for a main). Simple but fabulous, fresh and unpretentious food thats rare in the UK. We did eat in sorrento but the prices were the same tbh for the decent places in the back streets. Even a cafe by the train station (just 4.50E for a dish of pasta or meat) was really nice.

Hydrofoil worked out expensive for a family of 4 and i found sorrento a little disappointing in that there wasn't a lot too it and it just wasn't that impressive but apart from that we had a ball and found the Italians very friendly and a distinct lack of rip-off culture. Pompeii was quite spellbinding and Amalfi lovely. Gorgeous scenery and architechture, an amazingly anarchic and expressive culture, fabulous food and very hot weather.
