I had the same problem in my bedroom (shift work, sleeping during the day) and ended up nailing an old, thick set of curtains to the window frame.They had the added benefit of muffling the screams too.

The OH complains about the slightest glimmer of light stopping her from getting to sleep, so we got some 'blackout' curtains from the Range which are pretty effective. The blackout effect comes from some sort of plastic lining rather than the visible curtain material. on a bright sunny morning (the room faces South) there's only a bit of light visible around the edges.

We got some sheets of thick white vinyl material and then used double sided velco to attach them to the window.
It's done for 2 kids for the best part of 7 summers now with no complaints and I'll be using the same solution here in Dubai if my new curtains don't keep the master bedroom dark enough!
