Just spotted a 5 door one of these sub £1500 with 150000 miles on it, quick check over and everything is in its place.

no mayo under the oil cap no oil in the expantion tank all the toys work hpi clear and only 2 owners

A quick spin round the ind est where the dealer is located showed nice tight controlls and mutch less slop than the 110k mile v plate focus it may be replacing.

If we get it I'll get the belts and oil done asap (£250 at a guess).

Its to be wifeys car who had a big grin on her face after her little test drive......

Tax and insurance arent an issue ( already checked )

So go on what have I missed ?

And are there any polo specific forums ( google has thus far failed me frown )

Gearboxes are known to be made of chocolate AFAIK.

http://clubpolo.co.uk/ is probably the best place to ask though.

Gearboxes are supposedly weak mine has 128K on it and is fine - gut feel is young drivers hammering the box doesn't help

Check in the boot underneath the carpet for the sticker which says pedal box mod has been done

Plastics have some tactile rubber coating that wears badly

Errr best I post a link - stand by

Cambelt change is best done with tensioner kit and water pump - £360 all in from a main dealer or you can get the parts for about £175 and DIY

I've had 3 Polo's over the last 10 years (technically her cars) MKII Coupe S, MKIV (6N) 1.4CL and the last one a MK5 (6N2) GTi which goes onto it's new owner August the 1st

400 miles in a couple of days and averaging 40 mpg (yes it needed a wash)

Engine likes revs - but is a smidge buzzy on motorways although you don't need to drop a gear for instant go as it's already pulling close 4000 rpm at motorway speeds

The OE BBS RXII's suffer a lot from corrosion and are frequently either scruffy/flakey and frankly a mess but a little time and effort can bring them back to almost new - trouble is they are often replaced for less attractive aftermarket rims

Link to my refurb thread

http://www.tigerstyle.co.uk/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f...

Having refurbed mine I opted for winter wheels from another MKV version to keep the RXII's for summer use.

The cloth seats watermark easily unless you wetvac them all over - Cars with the leather option are very rare.

The dash also marks very easily

With the seats down it's a handy load area (especially if you like cyder)

Oh and always check with the dealer for parts before going aftermarket - in many cases they are same price and in some cases cheaper.

I think that's about all I can contribute

cheers guys, the car seems to tick all the boxes wifey wants and if all it needs is £350 ish of service work then oil and cosumables changes every 6000 miles or so ( wifey does about 10k a year ) then I think we'll be going for it.

Aren't the rear arches a bit rust prone?

Can't remmber exactly but they made a limited number of each colour (Red, Silver, Black) in both 3 door and more doors (5)

The Mk5 GTI has a 1.6 16v 125bhp Engine, with VVT. It came in either 3 door or 5 door hatchback versions. There were originally, for UK use, produced 500 cars in each colour/door variation, i.e. 500 Red 3 doors, 500 Red 5 doors. The statistics show:

In 2000, there were 1335 produced of the three door and 685 of the five door.
In 2001, there were 904 of the three door and 445 of the five door.
In 2002, there were only 19 of the three door and only 9 of the five door!
And here's a silver one

Edited to add the stats

I'm near certain I looked at a 5 door myself a few years ago but could be wrong.

Sounds like a good car op. Always liked the chunky styling and lovely bbs wheels.

Not aware that it's a common problem but then I strip the wheel arch liners out every year in the spring and get all the dirt out from behind them (but I do that on all my cars)

Sub £1500?

Surely if it starts, stops, appears reasonably sound and has an MOT then nothing else matters much?

Indeed nice little "pocket rocket" with good accident protection - side impact door bars and airbags

Not as dynamic or as nice to drive as say a 205 GTi but still fun and lively

It's not like it's a hard job and certainly stops that nasty salt from getting hold behind a plastic arch liner - my neighbours think I'm odd but they don't keep cars as long as I do so never see the rust that results from not doing it. Nice that I'm not alone laugh

More bullst advice being bandied about,'there are loads of 5'door gti polos take a look on autotrader.

Take the car for a decent drive if the gearbox bearings are noisy you will here it at low speed eg lift off the gas in 2nd gear is there any transmission noise?'if not don't worry too much (I've had a lot of these models and only one had a gearbox problem,'pedal box is more common you can feel the clutch pedal won't feel right if it needs doing.

Great little car for £1500 -'just look how much you'd pay for a polo 5 door 1.4 of the same age makes the gti will it's nice spec look a bargain!
