Looking for good classic or overfinch ? Where to look
Discussion
It depends how much you want to spend
A few dealers sell near perfect models for large sums of money, the hallowed halls of PH classifieds sometimes throws a few up. Failing that it's web forums or ebay!
There are a lot of sheds about but a few good solid motors still to be had.
Most of the overfinch RRC's I've seen for sale recently have been a little ragged.
What are you looking to get from a RRC?

Youngest RRC is going to be around 15 years old.
The later ones rust for fun & are usually far worse than pre 1989/90 ones.
Outer panels may look fine, but the under panels - sills, floor, inner wings(front and rear)body mounting points, rear body cross member, rear wheel arches - are often like doilies & the chassis rear end also needs careful looking at.
You are going to have to look at a LOT of lemons in the hope you will find a good one or learn to weld!
Repair sections are readily available though & they aren't that difficult to work on bodily or mechanically - big boy's meccano kits - but it depends on how capable you are & what tools you have.

Mine's an 86 3.5EFi on LPG.
I've had it for around 17 years...........but I can weld & SMART repair professionally so body repairs aren't a problem.
With the exception of the upper tailgate - which I replaced with an aluminium one some years ago - the external panels are original.
Same can't be said for the under panels, so far welding has included major outer parts of both sills, rear offside boot floor (the centre section on that MY is aluminium & riveted in place to the steel outers, later ones are steel & spot welded)seat belt mounting areas on both rear arches, parts of both rear inner wings, sections of rear body cross member, parts of both front footwells. All easily fabricated from steel sheet.
The outer panels are easily removable - mostly bolts & a few rivets - so access isn't a problem.
As I said earlier, a big boys meccano kit!

Well having been to look at a couple of perfect ones with no rust !!!! I have decided they are not for me
I looked at three at £3.5k,£5K and £9k.
As many of you had said they all have rust if you look hard enough, coupled with them all being perfect yeah right !!! ( and strong money) they all had several faults that whilst not the end of the world did need time and money to sort, I have had 5 TVR's !! so I am used to a few faults.
It was more that fact all three were rusty
So I am back to re thinking my plan and I think its either a Range Rover L322 petrol probably 2004/5 ( diesel just to asmatic for me) or a Disco 3 diesel, I think the Range rover may suit me best as I have had 2 discos break down on me in as many weeks.
Many thanks for all your advice up to now.

Starting to regret selling me defender now !!!

DA. So are we finally get some more detail on your next toy?
Hi. Sort of, but maybe not
Nothing much has happened with the 2 door yet. It has been sitting in storage since I picked it up in Feb.
I have a specialist restorer currently sorting out all the external trim bits. I have nearly all of them but was missing a rear bumper, front valence and original wing mirrors. I had an email yesterday to say we had found the wing mirrors.
Hopefully all the exterior trim will be full restored, powder coated and fitted by the end of autumn.
Then comes the tricky bit, to do the interior or the drive train next. Logically I should do the engine but I'm going to do it the other way around as I can live with a humble 3.5 RV8 but not the interior.
The current aim is for Andy Robinson to fit a bespoke cage and the for Auto Audio to trim it along with the whole interior. We'll probably go to 4 individual Recarros for seating.
Once that is done I have the big descision to make on the drive train.
I can either stick with a Rover V8 and fit a 5L from someone like TVR Power with a little super charger to get the 400 bhp I'm after or use the Zulu conversion from JE.
I love the fact that the JE system uses proper modern tech but it's money that can never be explained to the wife

So essentially, not much has happened for the last 6 months apart from the descision to sell the Overfinch. Which I will miss but as I reckon it will take at least a year to sell then I can always change my mind.

Well as way of a little update I have bought two !!!! Dont ask its a long story. Looked at several classics and everyone was rust in some part and my welding is rubbish !!
Basically the first one is this little beauty :
2002 4.4V8 ( so much nicer that the TD6 !!) 138k
Full ( and i mean full service history ( last serviced at 133k)
12 month Mot from saturday
Full vogue spec , including heated steering wheel,TV, Nav etc etc everything works !! Tow Pack etc etc
New tyres ( Pirelli Scorpions) all round
Recent air suspension
Parrot blue tooth
Drives fantastically !!
Slight wear on drivers bolster apart from that excellent condition
All bought for slighly less that one of the classics I was looking at !!

The second one is a 2008 TDV8 ...... need to sell one just dont tell the Mrs
