Another vote for TalkAudio here. The new vbb layout takes a bit of getting used to, but there's more information than you would ever need.

Can't find anything on what I want!
I have an idea that does away with a head unit and just uses an Iphone dock...connected to my car speakers, but do I need an amp?? that is my question?

It will depend on the car and audio setup, but most likely if you're getting rid of the head unit you would need an amp to drive the speakers. This may well leave you with limited means to control volume, balance, fader, treble etc which is why even a cheap head unit (with ipod connectivity) is usually a better option.

Some of the newer headunits are just an ipod dock with radio.

Perhaps, but within the unit there'll still be an amp and basic controls for volume, balance etc.
