What is the point of a supercar

With the obssesion with track times of supercars one might feel that the point of a supercar is to go fast round a track. However for the same money you could buy a new slicks and wings racer which would be ALOT faster around a track.

I suppose it's hard to find a 'point'. Companies come up with them to advance various components and systems, so I suppose that's a 'point' to them if some advanced gearbox or braking system ends up in the mass market.

That said, they're often beaten round racetracks by skeletal things with bike engines.

I'd venture that there is no point to a supercar other than to test the extremes of design, either in styling or engineering.

Surely it's about passion, want and desire. You buy one because you WANT it, long for it, dream of it.

I seriously doubt any supercar on 300bhp/ton's "want" list would be acceptable to the mass population - you know he always goes leftfield.

You might be right for many non-enthusiasts, but I suspect many PHers have somewhat more thoughtful reasons for wanting to own a certain car than the opinions of a tv show host.

TBH, you're right. Most peepul want a Ferrari because it's a Ferrari and it's the best "innit". A lot of people on PH probably want something more akin to a McLaren F1.

My favourite supercar is extremely expensive, hard to see out of and impossible to park, preposterously powerful and long-geared for ever driving properly on the road, far too big and probably too heavy, plus I don't really fit into it properly.

So it's got to be the twelve-year-old boy in me..

Just to say, I saw a bright yellow Diablo SV going along Upper Street, Islington on Saturday night. It was all huge presence, enormous noise, and Italian vulgarity. It made me feel 8 years old, and I loved it.

That's what supercars are for. Spectacle.
