When they ask why I don't use public transport more I think I'd simply explain to them that I have never been on or seen a bus or train which has leather seats, aircon at the exact temperature I like and my personal choice of music without having to have something stuck in or on my ears.
Spurred on by this amazing public transport movement I have investigated using the Merseyside Travel website journey planner to work out my commute to work by public transport. Now bear in mind I travel 12 miles each way across town and down a DC. This currently takes me 20-25 minutes (5+ of which is waiting at lights).
The journey planner proudly comes back with 1hr 20mins if I walk, catch a train, walk a bit, catch a bus, walk a bit more, then catch a bus that stops outside my work. The alternative route it suggests which takes 1hr 53mins doesn't have the train bit. It has a bus instead for that bit.

Apart from the facts that the nearest public transport is more than two miles from where I live , and I am often on 24 hour standby when even that is not operating , I would be happy to cycle to work - if those who would have me do so are happy to transport the boot full of photographic and video equipment I need to do my job ( and to be available within five minutes at any time of the day or night , 365 days a year ) .
This should be good
My commute to work is 12 miles / A road [mostly] / 20mn / 50mpg.
I did check the bus journey in the scope to opt out of the co car scheme to get a tastier car to use on week ends and holidays. Results:
- 15mn walk twice a day (could live with that)
- 2h45 bus trip with 2 changes including one at Pool -hell on earth- Meadow in Coventry
- But I am being dropped off just on my work's doorstep. Result
I am looking forward to the knock on the door which, if they've done their research correctly for the sake of showing good take-up statistics, will not come.

Oh, this should be good.
No, I don't use my car to get to work. I cycle, and once I've got the money together, I'll be on a motorbike, which will use a lot less fuel than even the bus, per passenger.
But when I get to work, I jump in a company car and travel hundreds of miles just to drive something usually rather thirsty round and round some country lanes with the sole purpose of telling people what it's like to drive.
I'll look forward to them telling me to voluntarily become unemployed for the good of the environment.

That's a joke isn't it?So they want to persuade us not to use our cars to get to work, shops or take the kids to school..
I think in some cases it would be a positive move to cut down on the 'school run' but that's about it.
This article almost implies that the government wants us to use our cars for pleasure only.
