I'll put this in BOLD and at the top, so you can all miss it.... 
this is not stereotyping.... just observations. And certainly doesn't apply to every owner out there. 
However my observations are primarily aimed at 996 owners and Boxster owners. Why is it, that so many are driven like maniacs or tits where unsuitable, yet as soon as another fast cars shows up they slow right down and act as though they never drive quick?
I've seen similar examples many times over the past 4/5 years. But a nice prime example yesterday.
Silver Porsche Boxster. Wide single carriage way by-pass style road. Fairly heavy traffic and plenty of on coming traffic.
Mr Boxster decides to weave in and out and at high speed pushing their way along the road and causing many an oncoming car to move over and make room for them.
Now I know the road always clears 2 round abouts down and opens onto a nice stretch of dual carriage way. So I stuck to the speed limit and didn't over take a single car. By the 2nd round about the Boxster was about 6 cars ahead as they crossed the round about.
I pulled over to the right lane as it opened up for the round about as it was clear. And proceeded to follow where the Boxster went. They hammered it down the road, so I followed and pretty soon reeled them in.
Mr Boxster then pulls over to the left lane and literally stamps on the brakes.
I did slow to 50mph to try and gauge how slow they were now going and we were still moving a lot quicker than they.
At the next round about now, which leads to the best part of fairly quiet 9 miles worth of unrestricted dual carriage way. Mr Boxster continues at his now snails pace, even being over taken by some of the cars they'd weaved in front of only a couple of miles back. I chuckled to myself and cruised along at 60mph.
Mr Boxster then appeared to do what the Yanks call "a ricer flyby" from about 1/4 of a mile back they hammered it. Suspect they were doing well into 3 figures despite me still doing 60mph. 
Anyone else experience similar?

Sounds like odd behaviour, I don't drive mine like that. I always quite like it when a fast car wants to play where the road conditions allow, i usually wind the windows down so i can listen to their car
Yep, I'm sure it's the minority, or at least the non enthusiasts at any rate. But it's surprising the number of times it's happened. An F360 did a similar thing two weekends back on the same road, although to be fair they hadn't been weaving in and out of traffic. It was just a blast and when they realised they weren't really gaining slowed right down to about half the speed limit, to only then do a high speed flyby on me about 3 miles down the road.Wonder if its because my car is more of an unknown and they just aren't sure how quick/slow it might be?

Most are well driven.
Suspect most drivers would be 30 + so *some* sense of responsibility has arrived.

Although I don't drive a Porsche, I would act in the exact way you have described.I drive my car fast because I want to. As soon as someone else shows up wanting to race I'll back right off. I have no desire to race with other cars on the road. You'll argue it's not racing, but it doesn't matter. All other road users are witnesses to the crash the other person is about to have. The last thing I want them saying is I was racing him.
I was having a great 8/10ths drive a couple of weeks ago and a Corrado VR6 gave chase. I backed right off and was almost at the point of stopping so he would leave me alone before he eventually gave up.
To be honest, I very, very rarely see Porsches being driven fast or well on the roads. I suppose they've gotten into the hands of too many middle aged businessmen who wanted to be able to say "I drive a Porsche". Which is a shame, as they are great cars. Now something like a Lancer Evolution, you could almost put money on seeing that being driven in anger.
