E39 brake light replacement? How hard can it be?!

Trying to change a brake light in an e39 touring. What's the SP on this? I can't seem to twist the bulb holder out to access the brakelight. I've undone the rear cover (with tool kit), and then pulled the buld holder (for the reverse and fog lights) out but I can't seem to undo the actual brake light element?
Does the whole thing come out is it just the actual bulb holder (twisting off?)?
Help please!

Got to the bottom of this. I manage to wedge the brake lights on and had a look at the rear. The brake lights are actually not on the boot but in the side areas (where the cd changer is). once I'd established that it took 2 mins a side to change. It was just a matter of undoing the covers, changing the bulbs (I did both sides) and replacing the covers. easy.
