Just phoned my doctors surgery and they want £132 to do my medical!
Phoned another local surgery and they told me I'd have to go to my GP as they have my records, is this true?
Also can anyone recommend somewhere around the Bedfordshire area for a medical if I don't have to use my own GP?

Thanks

Graham

Where are you?

Motor Racing Medics usually do medicals at the Autosport, Race Rerto & Kart Mania shows for about £90 IIRC. I think they are based near Gatwick if you need a medical outside the shows. 01293 822036.

I near Bedford/Luton. By the sounds of it I don't have to use my own GP, I'll try a couple of other surgeries to see what they say about, I'll take a look at the form and tell them what I need doing.

I run an ARDS school at Teesside, Middlesbrough where I have a Doctor who comes on site and carries out medicals for anyone taking their test, and he charges £50. If you are in the area at anytime, I'll let you have his number, and you can arrange to call at his house, and have your medical done there!! Obviously if you were to make a specific journey the cost of fuel would outweigh the saving!!

I just booked an appointment with my GP and asked him if he would fill out the form, its barely a medical, more a 5 minute assesment, once he had seen how quick and easy it was he only charged me like 20 quid.

Strangly my dad booked in with the same doctor a couple of weeks later and ended up paying 80 quid. The price you pay seems pretty much made up on the spot.

Went to my GP , they charged me £50 !

make sure you tell them it is not as stringent as the medical for HGV , they may be confused smile

That's not true, they were putting you off. You don't have to use your GP just a qualified medical doctor. Try ringing a private clinic/hospital such as Nuffield, ask if you can fax them the form and give you a quote.

As its a non NHS service its up to individual practices to set their own fees although from the sound of your local GP's surgery may think its the same exam as for a HGV licence. You could try showing then the form and see if they'll charge you less given the minimal amount of work involved

Tell them its at the level of a taxi medical. Also it definately does not have to be your normal GP.

My medical cost me 4 bottles of nice bitter. Helps when you have a close mate who is a GP though!

Just a quick input from a medical perspective. The MSA form is very basic and, quite honestly, if you're cynical about it you can complete the whole job in 10 minutes - and if you're charging the average of £90 or thereabouts that's a nice little earner.

I'd like to think that most doctors approach this medical quite seriously - after all it's your signature on the bottom of the form. I do the MSA medical to the same standard as an HGV/PCV medical - which as a previous poster mentioned is more thorough.

I think it is fair to say that the majority of my colleagues who are disinterested in helping out are either 1) just knackered at the end of another long day and don't fancy any extra work or 2) believe the medical is more complicated than it is.

A final thought - particularly for any potential racers who may have health problems - this is all about personal safety. Do you really want to entrust yourself to the cheapest provider?. Will they examine you thoroughly, will they spot the medical problem that could pitch you unconscious into the Armco at 120mph ? Do you also go for the cheap and cheerful option when you are choosing your helmet/on board extinguisher and race harness ?

My Nat B is issued by the Malaysian AA, they have selected doctors and the charge is a standerd 8 pound. If you are over 45 you also need a stress test which is a furtehr 40 pound.

I did find him from your post. I am about 1 hour drive away in east herts so not so far and saved £120 and a months delay from my GP who clearly did not want the work.
