cashing in tax on stolen car?

Car was stolen in the early hours of this morning, it's just occurred to me that the most valuable thing in the car (other than the car itself) is the tax disc - at £450 / year, and only being 3 months old that is. Can I be comfortable that the new "owner" cannot cash it in?

Secondly, if the car is not found and returned, can I cancel the tax without having the disc to surrender?

I thought you could contact them regarding lost or damaged tax discs?

They would cancel the old one and re-issue to the address they have for the registered keeper, so problem solved

Googled "apply for VEL refund", copy and pasted from here

Fill in a V33 ‘Application for a refund of vehicle tax when the tax disc is missing’. Send the form to Refund Section, DVLA, Swansea SA99 1AL.
The V33 form is only available by phoning DVLA Customer Enquiries on 0300 790 6802 or from a DVLA local office.

If the tax disc is found after a refund has been paid, you must return the disc with a covering letter to DVLA.

When you tell the police of the theft you’ll need to get a crime reference number. You’ll need to provide details of the theft and crime reference number given by the police on the V33 form.
As many vehicles are recovered within a few days of theft you should wait at least seven days before applying for a refund. Applying earlier than the seven days may cause your application to be returned to you.
If the vehicle has been recovered and you still want to apply for a refund you must tell DVLA what has happened to the vehicle since its recovery.
