Hi guys
Need to rebuild the twin HS4 1.75in SUs on my 1972 2500M.
The needles currently fitted are BAS.
Are these the standard fitments?
Thanks
Jim

I may be able to find that out for you; were the SUs standard fitment on any TR6 engines? What year?

I think that Strombergs were factory fitted, according to the handbook.
I'm not sure where the SUs came from. Probably not TR6 as I think that they were all fuel injection. The 2500TC saloon was introduced well after my 1972 2500M. Hence my query about the "correct" needles.

The carbs were already fitted to the car when I bought it years ago for restoration. Considering that it had been well bodged previously, it ran well on the long drive home, and its only now that I've got around to the carbs prior to start up.

Have you heard of Gunson's Colortune? It does a gorgeous job of helping to set up idle mixture. Beyond that, you can do shut-down during steady state running, and plug check by the side of the road at various RPM. That would give you some idea.

Hi, I'm new to this forum having just bought 2500M, not even picked it up yet but I've been after one for ages..

Anyhow, on the question of what the factory fitted to the 2500M, in TVR An Illustrated History (Johnny Tipler, published by Haynes) It says that the 2500 Vixen and subsequently the 2500 M was conceived as an export car for the US. The Triumph TR6 engine in carb rather than UK spec fuel injected already met the US emissions regs. All the cars were fitted with Carbs. It does say that a few of the 2500Ms were fitted with Zenith carbs but most were fitted with the standard factory fit of Strombergs. Also, says that only 947 2500M's were built of which over half went to the States, they were also exported to Japan, Germany, Cyprus and Greece, so there can't have been that many left for the UK market.....

The 2500 M I have just bought has been used for sprints, Nurburgring trips and the like and has been fitted with 2" SU's, apparatly its at about 150bhp.... I'll find out next week after I get my hands on it...

I doubt Tipler fked up the simple fact that the carbs in question are, in fact, Zenith Stromberg 175 (meaning 1.75") CD or, depending on year, CD2s.

They are total st, made with absolutely garbage quality plastic, that degrades rapidly. That pertains particularly to the decel valve housing, AKA white plastic fecal matter on the side, but also can be applied to the birth control type latex diaphragms used inside. Maybe if they would have used less spermacide...

These were made specifically as pollution control type carbs. They are the wrong fitment for sport, and we owe it to future generations to eradicate as many as we are able to.
Smash one with a (large) hammer, today.

Cheers!

If it wasn't Tippler that fcensoredked it up then maybe his editor did it for him, he definately makes the difference.

From what you say just as well the one I have bought has SU's fitted. I'll pack a hammer from now on just in case I find any Zenith Strombergs lurking around smash

Glad to know that both of you have the SUs. One nice mod, is the triple carb setup Richard Good makes, here in the USofA. More like an AH 3000, after that.

having been taken back to 1983 when i bought mine ,this has reminded me of its performance . i was expecting a feeeble 104 bhp and 108 mph top speed ... in fact someone had been up to something .. it had a cranking compression test of 225 psi ,pulled hard to 6500rpm ,and went past 130 mph .0 to 60 was around 7 s ...very very weird .
i junked that engine in favour of a v8 ,as was allways the plan.
