I like the other thread here for 0-60 in less than 4 seconds but it was vague so let me start this one with some more criteria. Yes a slower 0-60 of 5 seconds or less, can be any year, must be a fully enclosed (convertible okay with a retractable top), mass produced and easily purchased today (no weird kit cars or limited run of 100 cars etc.), must be bone stock no modifications at all and cost under 20,000. I think that should make it a little more interesting.

X350 XJR will do it in 4.9 seconds. Obtain a good one for £10k and readily available.

E46 M3, does that sneak in the 5 second 0-60 time?

ETA: 5.1 according to evo. Close enough!

Monaro VXR (9k-12k)
Good start would get you close to it, if not quick enough, supercharger for about 7k, or just get some better / bigger rear tyres.

Lotus Exige (S1 or S2 meets the criteria)?

An Elise/VX220 with a hard top sort of would, too. hehe

Moderately powered Caterham, then spend the £7k change on a luxury wafter!

I think it's a little fun for us average/poor guys to think about fun and fast cars that almost everyone can afford.

I think you'll find that most people can't afford to spend 20k on a car. hehe

tongue out You knew what I meant.

OT: But how on earth does one come to own eight different E39 BMWs? Do you work for them?
