Firstly, hello all.

I've joined up to make a few enquiries from you knowledgeable lot about my newly acquired 205 GTi. It's a well presented G reg example, 139,000 on the clock, 4 previous owners, an enormous folder of receipts, every MOT it's had.

Having driven it over the weekend I wanted some advise on the following issues;

1. The oil pressure gauge isn't working, I mean not moving at all but no warning light. Hoping this is a sensor issue, but in the worst case what would be the symptoms of poor oil pressure? (hopefully not point 2 below!)

2. It seems to rev only to 6,000rpm and does seem a bit restricted when entering the higher rev ranges.

3. There is no smoke on start up or when driving, the water temperature seems good and rises and lowers as you would expect, it idles like a bag of spanners which I think is fairly normal from what I've heard.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks in advance,

Thundernuts

Does the oil pressure light on the dash come on with the ignition on but car not started?

If you really did have no oil pressure it would sound like a bag of nails so I'd be pretty confident its just going to be a pressure sender fault.

Have a look at the air filter re poor reving. Might just be dirty.

Re the idle you can re track the afm, which may be the issue but its also possible there is an air leak in one of the vaccume hoses.

In any case a service, new oil, plugs, air filter, is cheap and easy to do and well worth it if you don't know when it was last done.

No light comes on at all in the oil pressure gauage. It does idle from cold, it is a bit lumpy but steady enough.

I am taking in to a local mechanic I know this Friday so will keep you posted what his verdict is.

You will find a brown multiplug were the sensors connect to the main wiring loom near the inlet manifold. Check this for rusty connectors and brocken wires.

Been there a few times with 205s.

I will take another look for the multi plug tonight, do you think this might be the cause of the oil pressure sensor not operating? I have my suspiscions this may have been "turned off" by the previous owner as the light may have been on, but this wil be confirmed on Friday when a mechanic takes a proper look.

Something else I noticed last night was a single knock when pulling away in first gear, and another single knock when braking. I'm hoping this is just a worn engine mount and the engine moving around.

When these issues have been addressed I'll be looking into the gear linkage rodss as the gear changes are a bit sloppy and I noticed when looking under the car it's pretty corroded.

Thanks for all the input so far.

If the oil pressure was that bad you would know about it, so unlikely the previous owner turned it off. Also several more connecctions go through the multiplug so if disconnected other stuff would not be working, including from memory the starter solenoid activation. The multiplug is a 'feature' of these cars and was teh first thing I replaces when I got my second one.

For the knocking double check that the subframe bolts are tight and while inder there double check the gear linkage to subframe mount as if this works loose the gear change gets a little sloppy.

You are lucky you have corrosion normally these self underseal with oil leaks!

Thanks for the message.

The plot thickened last night when I was taking a look under the bonnet. I noticed a loose wire which had been wrapped out of the way but quite near a connector coming out of the engine block. It was almost behind the alternator.

I connected this wire to the spade type connector and when I turned the key in the ignition one step the oil warning light came on along with the other lights on start up. Still no movement of the gauge but the light does not come on when the engine starts.

You've got an oil pressure sensor (which does the light) and an oil pressure sender, which does the gauge. They're next to each other, near the alternator. The sender is the bigger one. The light is the important one, the oil pressure gauge is really only there for comic value.
I'd start down with the connectors on those two. The wire can get pretty brittle and the spade connectors aren't the best.
