Hi

Part of our upcoming trip to Germany has the above leg (Koblenz - Wurzburg).

Can anyone suggest a divertion en route to somewhere/something of interest?

Looking at the map Mainz, Wiesbaden, Frankfurt and Darmstadt are fairly close.

Any suggestions for places of interest - Castles, war museums etc - that might do the job, would be gratefully received.

cheers

Graham

You must do the Boppard to Bingen route like so:

Koblenz --> Boppard --> Bingen --> Wurzburg.

The Boppard to Bingen part follows the Rhine valley and is the pretty part of the journey with magical-looking castles perched on the hillsides overlooking the rhine. Should take you less than 3 hours approx to get from Koblenz to Wurzburg using this route with the Boppard to Bingen bit being only 44 minutes approx.

Here's a map of the Boppard to Bingen bit using the A9:

...and here's the whole route:

...here's what to expect:

I'm travelling that route on August 4th.

Looks like a nice little tour Graham.

I've no experience of the rest of your route unfortunately so can't advise - perhaps somebody will post up their thoughts though.

I'm diverging from your route at Bingen and heading down to Nuremburg where I went for the 2006 World Cup and liked the place soooooo much that I always said I'd go back.

I'm in Nuremburg for a few days then I to will be heading out on The Romantic Road which I'll pick up in Wurzberg and onto Fussen. I'm taking my time down this stretch of road staying overnight in Rothenburg and Augsberg before arriving at Fussen.

From Fussen its only 2 hours and a fairly straight forward drive to the Stelvio Pass in Italy which I've gotta do as I'm so close to it that it would be a crime if I didn't. I'm assuming you know what the Stelvio Pass is - so you'll know why I'm doing it.

Fussen to Stelvio and back to Fussen is a days outing although I anticipate being back in Fussen by approx 6pm if I leave at 10am after breakfast.

The following day its from Fussen to Trier and the day after its back to the Eurotunnel but via the Mossel valley which runs almost parallel to the Rhine Valley route I told you about but is apparently just as pretty.

Sorry I can't help further with your journey but mine is as much a mystery/novelty as yours from Bingen/Nuremburg onwards.

If your taking the Aston I'm sure you'll have a fantastic time yes I'm told the roads are made for these GT-type cars.

Yes its in the AM smile

I did the Stelvio back in 05 in my TVR Griffith which was superb. This time we plan to visit one of the castles (Neuschwanstein probably) and also go up the Zugspitze as well.

Have a great trip smile

Update

Took the advice given and went to Heidelburg and did the Boppard to Bingen detour. Both good experiences - clap - thanks

Wasn't that impressed with the Romantic Road:

- Missed the start in Wurzburg so had to pick it up 10 miles or so in
- Next 10-20 miles were 'OK' but nothing extra special
- Then we had a detour as the road was closed near Rothenburg
- 'Lost' the road for large sections after Donauworth - unless fast dual carriageways are "Romantic"
- To be fair the last 20 miles or so to get to Fussen were excellent.

Would recommend all the other places we stayed at. We especially liked Fussen

cheers again

Well done Oblio clap

I'm currently in Augsburg tonight and its on to Fussen tomorrow morning - really looking forward to it.

Romantic Road is OK but not what I expected. You missed an absolute gem if you didn't hit Rothenburg though. One of the most charismatic places I've ever been in Europe.

Staying on the RR is a bit problematic for me as the Tom Tom says one thing (got an RR itinery from the Tom Tom's website) but the roadside signs direct you another occasionally. You still end up back on the RR though even if you take the Tom Tom route.
