I had my last insurance policy with Chris Knott but it was underwritten by Highway Insurance, this expired over a week ago. I phoned up before the expiry date and requested that proof of no claims be sent to me and they agreed to send it on or just after the expiry date, which was fine.

Today I receive an email from my new insurers tell me that I have until next week to provide proof of no claims, after which they will automatically take payment for an increased premium!

I've phoned Chris Knott twice and they say they've already sent the proof but will put in another request to Highway to send it again, this could take until next week...and that's if it even turns up. I've phoned Highway and as soon as I mention I'm after proof rather than taking out a new policy they direct me to another line which, apparently, nobody can be bothered to answer (I've been on hold for centuries).

I'm not exactly looking for advice here, just wanted to rant at what utter tts insurance companies are. I wish they'd just communicate with each other instead of going through all this st.

Don't worry about it. Even if you do get charged the difference, when the proof finally comes through they will refund it. I do understand how frustraiting it can be though!

Fair enough, it's how much the increased is going to be that worries me.

If you have your policy number and the broker / insurer on your old policy then pass that on to the new insurer, also your invitation to renew will have your NCD on there, 99% of insurance companies will accept that also if you have it.

Why is there not a database insurers can check to instantly seem what NCD you have?

because it would mean insurers having to share customer data, and it would also be one more thing for us to pay for.

The renewal quote from your old insurance should have the no-claims period included on it. I used it a couple of years ago when I was switching insurers.

Since then I've went through a broker and they seem to handle the no-claims proof as I don't remember having to forward anything last time I switched policies through them.

I've got a policy with Chris Knott for the second year running now, and was told they only accept up 9 years no claims bonus. This year I should of rolled over to 10 years NCB and when my renewal came through it still said only 9 years.. I was told the above about how they only accept 9 years when I phoned up to question it.

I'm looking forward, when I come to leave them (next year most likely) of getting proof that I actually have 10 years (well, should be 11 years by then) so that I can pass this onto my next insurer.

Like the OP, the attitude of insurers boils my piss. When you sign up with a new insurer, they demand proof IMMEDIATELY. When you leave an insurer they're incredibly casual about posting this proof out to you. Don't they see the enormous contradiction in what they want and how they behave? Scumbags - the lot of them.

I just phoned my new insurers with my old policy number and they said they wont do it that way unless you have failed to provide proof of NCB within the given timeframe...so why not just do it now instead of keep giving me extra days??

Exactly, they go from 'bestest buds' to not giving a st unless you're taking out a new policy.

I had to wait 2 months and then out of the blue I got 3 letters from ASDA 3 days in a row confirming my NCB....

Strangley enough for the two car insurance policies that i have recently taken out, apart from the usual question of how many years no claim i have, there has been no request to provide the proof of it.
I do have copies of the ncd/b though as i expect them to ask for it sometime.
