Our council have decided to rip up all the paving flags on the pavement and replace them with tarmac. Fair enough.

However, the way they've gone about it is nothing short of moronic.

Our road is quite narrow and there is very little room for on street parking. Fortunately the majority of houses along our road have off street parking, driveways long enough for two or three cars, meaning not many people park on the street.

Unfortunately, these workmen have told all residents we won't be able to use our drives as once the tarmac goes down it needs to be left for 24 hours. we're expected to park elsewhere. On the street is out of the question thanks to the barriers and cones they've erected for the entire length of the road. We can't even access the drivewayss now either as they've now ripped up the flags at the end of the drives and left a whopping great channel where the pavement used to be.

They claim they'll be finished by Friday. I'm not so optimistic, the 'pavement-less' stretch of road round the corner that's been sitting like that for the last week or more suggests otherwise.

I'm not entirely sure where the entire road is now supposed to park their cars either, round the corner? On another street? Well, maybe, if they weren't doing the exact same thing on surrounding streets displacing those residents cars!

so far their schedule has been;

Monday: Remove flags (except at end of drives), pile them up into neat stacks, that took till about 9.30am, bugger off for the rest of the day because it's raining.

Tuesday: Return, put stacks of flags onto truck, remove remaining flags at end of drives, done by 9.30am, sit in truck stuffing their faces and drinking brews.

They recently tarred the pavement in our estate. We were able to drive on and off our driveway within minutes of them passing. The pavement didn't melt, get rutted or anything. They were doing it during the heatwave in April/May when it was 25C.

I call BS on their 24hr thing.

They must be talking rubbish. Whenever roads get re-laid around here, traffic is allowed on as soon as the work is finished.

They did this at my girlfriends house without telling her in advance, so her Ka was stuck on the drive until I moved their barriers and laid a couple of scaffolding planks over the path so she could get out.

What really boiled my piss was that they finished working on the Friday, mid-afternoon and left it like that over the weekend. They came back on the Monday morning and finished it within an hour.

but the bloated pay packets of public sector workers are even more bloated by overtime ...

Overtime is an evil word in the Public Sector - the only place in the NHS which routinely gets overtime is the Ambulance Service - and that is because of the closed shop nature of their training meaning there is little alternative for staff other than Paramedics ( and the pool of paramedics who solely work outside the NHS services is quite small - so the NHS paramedics know they have management over a barrel)

It must be the same workmen, they blocked my Zed on the drive without enquiring whether we might like to move it. One minute the flags at the end of the drive were there, the next they were gone.

get a couple of scafold boards and some bricks to go under in support if needs be, then on and off

but ring local council and ask for a schedual of works so you know when they will be back to finish the work

advise them if not done during that period you will get it finished and pass the payment on to them for failure to adhere to agreed time scales

What really take the biscuit is they've left two solitary flags at the end of the drive of the house next door, which is occupied by two doleites that never ever leave said house unless it's dole day, so they can get their kids prams out!

You'd be able to drive over it pretty much as soon as the last roller gets out of the way, but do your best to head in a straight line, as for the first few hours whilst it is warm, turning the wheels when stopped would dig into it.

Cheers, I'll keep that in mind. Of course, the real question now is when are they going to finish the work. Not soon I imagine judging by the stretch of pavement round the corner that's been sat unfinished for a week and counting.

You are probably looking at it being finished sometime during the middle of next week, judging by the speed my local council roads dept work. Most of their working day will involve standing around looking at each other and sitting in their vans.

That depends, did you notify your insurance company? Because leaving your car overnight for long periods somewhere other than where you specified in your policy seems like asking for trouble. Ie, my insurer expects my car to be parked overnight on the drive, if it gets stolen one night from two streets away I can imagine them using that as an excuse not to pay out.

Also, wtf is this in homes and gardens? It's about cars and parking, therefore 'general gassing'.

The work is probably but subbed out to contractors. So that's another layer of management/director salaries and profit margins to pay for.

Go on a driving holiday for a few days, sicky off of work? That's what i'd do rather than park somewhere else.
