Our bathroom sealant has turned black with mould. Can this be fixed using some substance, or do I need to replace it? If it needs replacing, can I stop it from happening again?

Sounds like it's removal time, you can get anti fungicidal Silicone, it ain't cheap but I've used it over the years and the mould problem is a thing of the past.

Once it's gone, it's gone. Time to rip it out and start again. Fungicidal bathroom silicone is only a few pounds a tube.

I've used neat bleach before poured on and left for 24 hrs. Might be worth a try.

BAL microban or Mapei sanitary (lots of colours) Screwfix is inexpensive. www.screwfix.co.uk.

How about black spots of mould on the grout? Doesn't come off with scrubbing, have tried bleach/chlorine sprays.

It sounds like you need better ventilation to help reduce mould in the future.

same problem. The hyphae of the mould has invaded the grout and bleach etc will only kill the surface mould. The best (but most painfull) solution is grout removal and then use anti-bacterial grout.

Thanks all - it sounds like it's a removal job as it's solid mould and I've given it a good scrubbing to no avail.

We had the same issue here, couple of bottles of this liberally applied and left to work did the trick.

Be warned though, keep the windows open, its evil stuff to inhale.

As we're having a private tech-fest; I'd have thought cell wall structure was more important - bacteria (both kinds) are tougher.

It's basically just diluted bleach though. Thin bleach will do the same. One way to sort the grout its to hold bog roll on the grout lines with bleach to make them damp. Push onto the grout and leave the bleach to soak in overnight.

The Dettol stuff definently removes the mould better thin bleech - it's excellent stuff.
