On Video: New Porsche 911 (Sort Of) Revealed

As the child might say the night before Christmas: It's almost here! It's almost here! It's almost here!

We refer, of course, in our usual slightly gibbering way to the imminent arrival of the new 991-generation 911, which is set for its official debut at the Frankfurt show in September.

And what has got us metaphorically jumping up and down on the sofa until we're almost sick with excitement? Why, it's 1min 22secs of Porsche promo video, giving us a proper taster of the new 911.

Of course, child-like excitement is probably justified when a new Porsche 911 comes along, because it doesn't happen very often. And this 911 is very new indeed: new monocoque, longer wheelbase, enlarged engines, electro-mechanical steering (which worries us), and a seven-speed manual gearbox (which intrigues us).

Im going to push the boat out here and say it's going to look pretty much identical to a 997, except they will tell us every panel is new, and it's going to have about 20bhp more.

It does look bigger than a 997.

I am sure it will be an awesome car and set new standards.

But I am disappointed in some of the styling - especially the rear three-quarter window line. The shape of the crescent of the rear side windows is the signature element of a 911 coupe - but in this new car it looks much more compressed. It has lost it's identity. This classic element of a 911 now looks generic, like any other car. Actually, the profile looks a lot like an XK Jaguar.

In short, it looks a bit bland. A bit generic. 911 by Ikea. I hope I am wrong.

I thought the rear 3/4 shot at about 57 seconds looked remarkably like a Continental GT.

apart from some of the taping at the front, it does actually look practically identical to a 997. 7 speed manual sounds pretty interesting though, though i can't imagine it's too hard to design if you already have 7 speed flappy-paddle boxes to be honest.

There's an awkward front 3/4 photo of this in a recent Autocar. Looks very long. Also as mentioned above the roofline doesn't seem right.

Looks like they're following other manufacturers and hiding the entire engine with plastic panels now Guess that's the price to be paid for moving the engine more midship whilst playing with wheelbase.

I agree it looks incredibly similar to a 997, but I don't think it'll be anything less than a stunning car to drive. Now if they can just give me the option of a GT3 with the PDK I can chop my C2S in for one...

It will look like a 911 because it is a 911, and that's what the customer base wants.

It will be a great drive, but as every other 911 variant has it will move further away from the orginal, quieter with more room and more speed but perhaps less 911ness.

From what I've read it will be up to 50kg lighter than the 997 with the S pushing out 400bhp so at 1450kg and with 400bhp it should be one hell of a cooking Carrera.

well it has a longer wheel base, if the car is longer in general then of course it'll look like a panamera

It looks long and smooth. Although part of that may be the lens. Hopefully it won't be vast next to the 997. We'll see...
