Hi all, looking for some advice for the first leg of a European trip.

We need to get from London to Krakow, but I don't fancy doing the whole 1000miles in one hit, so I was thinking of stopping around 150miles short in Wroclaw and doing the final 3ish hours the next morning.

Now I just need to work out the quickest way to get there! I'm not too bothered about having scenic or fun roads to drive on at this point, I'd rather just get it out of the way quickly and smoothly. I can be flexible on departure time if necessary to avoid traffic - which looks a certainty as it involves crossing some very densely populated parts of Germany?

Any pointers appreciated, ta.

Duisburg to Dortmund is the only tricky bit.

Are you taking the Citroen in your profile ?

I had a look on viamichelin and their recommended route is largely the same as Google.

Is it worth taking a detour around the Duisburg - Dortmund bit or just timing it so I'm passing through in the early hours?

Yep, it'll be the Citroen.

I've only done that section once and it seemed
similar to a UK 50 mph dual c'way.

Best avoid the local rush hour, which will be about
7-8 am and 4-5 pm.

Good luck with the Citroen and be very very careful
about going in the fast lane. IIRC average speed on the
autobahn for *all* vehicles is something like 95 mph,
so there are plenty of folks tanking along at 120 mph,
and 150 mph is common.

Even if you aren't flat out in your Citroen, plenty
of folks around you will be going a lot faster
than you are *and* be expecting you to cope.

Warning over, have a good time. I hear the beer's
not too bad ;->

50mph DC is fine by me. I did consider taking a detour through Luxembourg to fill up with cheap diesel but the added time and mileage probably isn't worth it. Will just go direct from Calais and avoid the rush the best we can.

I can't imagine I'll be spending much time in the outside lane! It struggles to do 100 so I imagine we'll just bimble along at 70-80 for the most part, unless it's very quiet indeed.

Cheers dcb, much appreciated.
