Selling cars without tax.

Firstly let me apologise for the grandiose title and if this offends anyone on PH. That's not the intention. Neither does this just apply to PH. The following comments are based on 18 years experience in the Motor Trade and, more to the point, the current desire to buy a car.
Very simply, why are so many cars for
sale NOT TAXED?
I want to buy a car I can use, drive
home in, enjoy. Is that unreasonable?
Surely in a difficult market where,
presumably, selling price is important,
putting one more obstacle in the way is unwise.
Rant over: back to looking.

A lot of people cash in their tax disks before trading in their cars, just a little bit extra, and for a dealer to keep every single car on their forcourt taxed is just very expensive. There shouldn't be any reason they can't tax it before selling it to you though.

Apart from people buying an untaxed vehicle and expecting to drive it away the same day - when it's a day that the Post Office is shut.

Very few people these days leave unexpired tax discs in their cars any more when trading them in, there's little incentive for the dealer to ask them to either since no longer can they reclaim them either.

It is handy when people do though for precisely the reason the OP states. But so few people are content to pay for other people's VED any longer.

probably cos it's illegal now to nhave an unisured car taxed and most cars for sale are uninsured cos they aint used hense being for sale.

Yes yes, alright, I accept all the ribbing about my inability to add a title (which I thought I did: must use the preview next time).

Just to add, though, I should have made clear that I was only referring to private sellers. I know that a dealer cannot hope to keep his stock taxed. I also know that a dealer can no longer reclaim the unexpired tax, as someone incorrectly said: only the registered keeper can do that.

That's what I said. There's no incentive for dealers to ask people to leave their tax discs in as they (the dealer) can no longer reclaim them.

Excuse the hijack, but are we saying, if i chopped my car in with 6 months tax still left on it, i cant whip it out and return it to dvla for a refund?

That's why my last car was sold with no tax. Took it off the road when I bought my new one and didn't fancy paying to insure 2 cars -bearing in mind that by using the no claims on the car I was actually driving meant the premium on a car sat at my parents' suddenly doubled.
IT's not so much being desperate to grab that £70 back (and possibly making the car less appealing to a buyer) It was not wanting to fork out £100 a month for a car I don't use.
