You know You Want To...Porsche GT1 Strassenversion
...just don't follow someone over a crest at speed
For a lot of people the Porsche GT1 will be best remembered for this little bit of difficulty at Road America in 1998. The sad fact though is that the GT1 hadn't really been much of a success on the track before it provided that epic piece of footage.
It did win occasionally, like at Le Mans in 1998 when its principal (and notably faster) rivals all retired (Still, a win at Le Mans is pretty good - Riggers), but generally it just wasn't quick enough.
None of that, however, will matter a tiny jot to the person who is next to acquire this road-going version of the GT1 (thanks to Riggers for the spot).
This is mainly because the one in which Yannick Dalmas attempted a vertical take-off was the 1998 evolution of this car.
As such it shared little in common with the ill-fated racing car - and also because they'll be rolling in one of just 25 homologation GT1s in existence, which we imagine would be something of a cheerful experience.
Sadly the vendor has yet to get back to us with any details, so all we know at the moment is that this one is in Kyoto in Japan and has covered 900km from new.
The asking price of 1,200,000 euros works out at just over £1,050,000, and that's a lot for a car which, regrettably, will probably at best merely cover another 900km in the next 15 years. This is a shame, but that accident and the associated notoriety of the GT1 probably means that these cars will be acquired for investment only.
Still, imagine turning up to a Brands Hatch GP circuit track day in it...
The 911 GT1 wasn't the MOST successful GT1 car, but you can hardly argue with an outright Le Mans win!
It was pretty competitive in the British GT series too (anyone remember the Blue Coral car?) and other championships.
I'd take one of these over that V10 thing they did more recently anyday!

Does the accident really have that much a bearing? I'm sure the same could be said for the CLK-GTR /LM given it's '99 flip, but it doesn't seem the first thing that springs to mind when people comment on the road car, rather than just how awe-struck they are by the car.
What a beauty. I remember driving one of these on my old xbox on the nurburgring, in white as well. Closest I'll ever get to one of those
