Currently considering a very well spec'd 130i. It's listed as an 'ex-BMW' car with 1 private owner since. What could the 'ex BMW' element mean? Presumably everything from a pampered BMW executive's car to a thrashed press car? Thoughts?

Mine was an 'ex BMW management' car .... previous keeper was named but shown on the V5 as T/A ... and a company name that is a lease company owned by BMW ... so my car may have had the named driver ... or more likely it was simply a lease car within the BMW group !

I am not overly bothered as the car was mint - I would suggest you go on how the car looks / has been looked after + drives rather than worry too much over it's initial ownership ... If it looks and feels good it probably is. The 'BMW' keeper at the beginning of the cars life is not likely to have done more that 5K miles in it anyway I would guess ...

I bought an ex-management car, it listed a lady as the previous owner with the address as BMW UK etc.

Usual spec, leather, bluetooth etc. Car was mint, had only done 5K miles and I picked it up when it was 12 months old saved £15K over list (was bought from a BMW main dealer).

I feel sorry for anyone that buys brand new when a manufacturer can flood their own forecourts with cheapo ex-management cars.

Yep, all management (well any BMW staff member eligible for a car) will be registered to the person themselves at one of the BMW addresses. They will have registrations beginning with a Y as they are registered at the distribution plan oop north.

Anything with a non Y plate proportion to be BMW Management will be a dealer management car.

My touring was 8 months old and had 10k off and was mint and with over 2 years warranty left could not go wrong.

My brother has an Ex-BMW management E90 320d, he's just done over 130K miles, runs like a dream, only problems have been the fuel sender in the tank not giving a correct reading and a blown turbo at about 100K miles, still looks like its fresh too.
Going of this one I'd not let it worry me.

why would it be an issue. i would have thought it would be miles better than some randomer owning the car.

My 130 was an ex BMW Fleet car with a higher spec than i was after with 3500 miles showing.

It was 8 months old also with a list price of £31745 and i paid £19900

Very pleased with it and still have it over 2 years down the line.
Change the tyres, will improve the car no end

Because not everybody who gets a new car every 6/12 months knowing they can just hand it over for a replacement will run it in properly, treat it well and look after it for the long term. Theres nothing necessarily to be alarmed about, but i dont think its necessarily a positive. It might have been looked after by the dealer, then again the 'customer' has little vested interest in it. So it might not.

In virtually the same boat here - effectively saved a fortune.

Didn't know that about the "Y" registrations either, but that's interesting to know!

As for press cars, I've seen AUC cars advertised before with a particular options pack (basically everything on the options list) which is a dead giveaway - can't for the life of me remember what that pack is called though.
