Walking up Ben Nevis in September with some friends! Can anyone recommend anywhere decent to get a hearty meal and some tasty beverages to wash it down with after a long day on the mountain?

FW is a bit of a hole tbh. Pubs v average. No really good restaurants, plenty of average pub options. I've stayed there a few times, but my preference is to head for Spean Bridge. There's a cracking little bistro / B+B (there's only 1!)there where the food is absolutely lovely. There's also a proper spit and sawdust pub round the corner, called the Commando after the Royal Marines who did their wartime training up there and it's v near the Commando Memorial.

The Ben Nevis Inn at the foot of the mountain path is always good. The Grog and Gruel in FW is pretty good, owned by the same guy as the Clachaig. Can't think of anywhere else worth going in FW.

Could possibly be the only time a "munchy box" is an appropriate option?

Well we're staying in Fort William so we are just looking for somewhere to fill our bellies, have some well deserved drinks and then stagger back to the hotel. So really we are looking for somewhere local in Fort William.

I was going to recommend the Grog and Gruel as well - decent beer and bar snacks. As has been said, FW generally not bursting with quality dining.

My only recent experience has been the Ben Nevis Inn, and it was very good, food, drink and atmosphere.

As it's a bit out of town the only option other than walking is to get a taxi, which should be pretty cheap.

The only hotel i've stayed in recently was the Ben Nevis Hotel and Leisure Club, which was pretty basic and nothing great.

On the other hand I believe Inverlochy Castle is quite nice and should do decent food.
