All being well we're about to move house and I'm swapping my side-by-side double garage for a tandem.

The new garage is a brick-and-tile pitched roof affair (at a guess) around 9' wide and 32' long and one wall acts as the boundary with the next door neighbour (but is on my land).

At the rear of the garage is a small square of land 9' x 14.5'. I'd like to extend the garage straight back into this, using as much of the 14.5' extra depth that I can, however I anticipate I can't go all the way back as this would then butt up against my neighbours garage (with pitched roof running the 'wrong' way to join up).

Property is a new-ish build (2003). Only issue I can see is that the neighbour could object however the extension would not block light or cause extra shade in their garden (it will in mine though!).

So...
1. Is extending close to / on the boundary an issue?
2. How close can I go to my neighbours garage? This garage actually forms part of the boundary wall along the rear of the property (rest of it is 6ft high brick wall)
3. I'd like to make this extension a self contained room with own entrance - does this create any issues (could they be circumvented by adding a doorway into original garage)?
4. Ballpark costs (bearing in mind it is a pitched roof).

Plan B is a garden office / posh shed.

Just don't do it! i did, my garage is just under 9 foot wide too. Bloody useless. The only bad thing about our new place but it bugs me greatly. Been out tonight working on the car in the rain cos it won't fit in the garage and leave me space to work!!!!!

A garage needs to be at last 11 feet wide internally to be of any use......

Swapping a tandem for a side-by-side yes but the other way round? Nah ... (says he with a single!)
