Been watching some vids:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B7xLqntktro
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=beRNRYv10B8

And was wondering how these vehicles would have fared in terms of lap times on the TG track or places like the Nurburgring.

In standard trim mostly, as I know modded leaves huge possibilities. hehe

But that said, considering how much (or how little) you can get these for today. How would they compare (with maybe a couple of simple mods) to things like an e90 M3, 1M, Evo X or even that new XKR-S thingy on TG at the weekend. In terms of pure A - B ability, either on track, road course or B road?

Anyone? smile

I'd say the 3000GT would set a new fastest lap record, but i'm biased (or deluded)

In standard form, they would probably be slower than modern hot hatches around a track, there what 15-20 years old, and therefore have 15-20 year old brakes, tyres suspension, and they weigh about 1700KG.

The 0-60 and 1/4 mile times are about the same as my DC5.

A petrol head at work had one before he left, and his was running about 350bhp and it still wasn't that quick, he sold it quickly.

Tg track is very different to most other circuits, as it's very much an engine track

It's also very much an airfield and, to be frank, pretty crap for actually testing a cars abilities.

It's cheap though - which is why TG and McLaren use it...

Curious, but how have these things really changed? confused

Ok I know ceramic brakes are newish. But still pretty rare on most cars, certainly hot hatches wink

But I'm not sure I truly see how brakes and suspension have really changed all that much? e.g. a Porsche Boxster used MacPherson struts, in essence not all that different to the MacPherson struts on my 1970's Triumph.

Same's true with tyres. Hell you can even buy some of the same tyres still. Ok semi slicks and sticky track biased tyres are more common today. But I don't think regular tyres have changed much. Only variations on tread patterns.

smile

However if I'm wrong, I'd love to know some technical facts on how your average hot hatch has superior suspension design to a MK IV Supra.

Some of those cars clock low/mid 5's to 60 and are in the 13's @ 1/4 mile trapping over 104mph. I like ITR's (more DC2 I admit tongue out ) but is a DC5 really putting out those kind of stats? I though an EP3 was more like mid/high 6's to 60mph and low 15's in the 1/4 mile?

Ok smile

Any other track then.

BTW - if it's such an engine track, how come the RX-8 did so well against the 350z and e46 M3 on the TG track and hasn't at other locations?

They would fair badly I'm guessing and would be shown up by most decent warm hatchbacks on most tracks.

They are old cars - and IIRC - weren't exactly praised for their handling prowess when they came out - against modern cars on modern suspension and with modern electronic trickery they would come away with a bloody nose.

I can't imagine that any of the cars on your list would lose out to a 3000GT. In fact having had a look at the list again I'd bet my house that each of them would hand the Mitsi it's arse on any track in the world (with the possible exception of Ice racing - even then I'm not sure and the Evo would still murder it)

I went in one back in 1996. Even then it felt slow and wallowy.

I don't think any of the cars in the links would get close to any of the current models you mentioned for comparison.

Always the scooby chavs hatin.

Im just going off what ive seen with my own eyes with a 3000GT, and that link you gave says 0-60 in 6 and 14.xx 1/4 mile at 98mph. Exactly the same as a DC5.

It's simple maths. 300bhp-1700kg, isn't that great, especially on a track where that weight will show up even more in cornering speeds.

LOL, you don't think tyres have changed much in 20 years? OK. Hahahah.

The only car I've owned that TG has tested is my S2000 which recorded 1.37 in atrocious conditions. What do they reckon the wet disadvantage is? 4 seconds? I'd expect my Supra to give my S2000 an absolute beasting. The 350Z is 1.31 by way of comparison.
I'd have thought a Supra would be pretty thrifty round the track tbh.

What about the others, the 255hp RX-7 TT and the 320hp Supra?

Around a track I'd expect a Mitsu 3000GT or Nissan 300ZX to get comprehensively beaten by the latest generation of hot hatches, such as a Megane 250 RS Cup or Mk2 Cupra R. A Supra (standard) might fare slightly better but I'd also expect it to lose. For comparison the Megane posted a 8:07.97 nordschleife full lap, I think the aforementioned Japanese cars would struggle to get within 30 seconds of that. A standard Evo 6 recorded a best time of 8:24, so these would be at least another 10+ seconds behind that.

Sounds about right, the latest hot hatches are making more power than they were years ago. The Jap cars had that 280 bhp limit for years (even if they cheated a little).

The 3000GT is a very heavy car, never had much going on in the tuning scene or racing. Has tons of gizzmos and is over-engineered.

300ZX is better car but still very heavy. Engine out for almost every job as well.

The Supra was only mid-pack as a race car back in the day, but the 2JZ is an almighty motor even in stock - unopened - guise. It's still a heavy car though and soft as stock. Tons of potential to do sub 8 min laps and lower though.

The best Jap cars from that era are the Skyline GTR's.

I'd take a Skyline GTST over a Supra also due to lighter weight, better chasis.

Looks like the Mitsu 3000 is quicker than an S1 Elise: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0tPTVh6rg_A 50 sec. Not sure on the track though.

Don't be daft, nothing has changed in 20 years, they would be as quick as anything today.
