Going to look at a first gen '99 Audi A3 1.6 tomorrow for my mother. It looks good on paper, lowish mileage, service history, cambelt change etc.

Anything I should look for specifically with this car / engine? Can't seem to find much online which I am guessing is a good thing!

Thanks J.

Doesn't look too bad - review seems to be that it's a bit cramped in the rear (non issue), it's not swift/sporty (probably a bonus) and that repair costs are a little higher than average.

Doesn't seem to be much in the way of reliability issues.

If it is the Same 1.6 8V that was used in the golf, then:

Gearboxes are prone to explosion, diff rivets fall apart and often shatter the casing

Water pump impellers fall apart, (OE part was plastic) the new parts are however brass so make sure it was changed with the cambelt

If not....

no idea!
