Hi Brian, I just placed an advert for my car and realised straight away I need to correct the title because Ebay automatically populated the title title, based upon my registration, incorrectly but I cannot edit it.

Brian - the bid must have happened in the few seconds between my posting and realising the type of car is wrong. I need to correct this as the bidder is bidding upon an incorrect car. There must be a way around this......

The TITLE is incorrect. The car IS NOT the one advertised in the title. The fact that someone bid on it between the time I posted and the page refreshing to show me my item was only about 20 seconds. Are you saying that due to the fact that someone has bid in that time I cannot correct the TITLE to list the CORRECT CAR? Surely this is fraud? I cannot sell someone a car that is not the car they are bidding on

I suggest you to end listing early and relist it with correct title and if item is successfully sold you will get insertion fee credit.

To end your listing early, please follow the steps below.

1. Click on the "site map" link located on the Navigation Bar. Scroll down to the "End Your Listing" link under the heading Selling Activities located in the My eBay section in the middle column.

2. On the next page, enter your User ID, password, and the item number, and click on "Continue".

3. If there are bids on the item, you will see two choices. The first is "Cancel bids and end listing early". The second is "Sell item to high bidder(s) and end listing early". If you wish to end the item without selling it to any bidder(s), please select the first option and click on "Cancel bids". If, however, you wish to sell the item to the high bidder(s) for the current high bid price without waiting for the listing to end on its own, please select the second option and click "Sell item".

4. If there are no bids on the item, or if you select to cancel the bids on the item, you will be prompted to select a reason for ending the item early. You can finish ending your listing by clicking on "Continue".

5. If there are bids and you select to sell the item to the high bidder(s), you will end the listing at the current high bid price by clicking on "Sell item". You will then be instructed to contact the high bidder to complete the transaction.

-The item is no longer available for sale.
-There was an error in the starting price or reserve amount.
-There was an error in the listing.
-The item was lost or broken.

So by cancelling the first listing due to an error in the listing, then relisting the item again correctly, the overall charge will be the same as though I had only listed it once?

Yes, you will be charged for insertion fee for relist and if your item is sold successfully, you will get insertion fee credit.

So what you are saying is that I will now have to pay a SECOND listing fee due to the incorrect original listing - filled in by Ebay? If the car does not reach reserve I will have paid for the advert listing twice because someone placed a bid within seconds of me posting?

I am sorry to inform you that you have to pay second insertion fee and the insertion fee in your first listing will be credited if your item is sold.

What about if I remove the initial bid and then edit the title OR ask the bidder to remove their bid? There MUST be something you can do - this is ridiculous!

Yes, I know it is ridiculous but you can't edit once the bid is placed whether you cancel bid or buyer retracts the bid, the only option is to end listing early and relist it.

Then I am being penalised due to a mistake I did not make. I immediately realised and tried to correct but because someone bid within 20 seconds of me listing an incorrect item Ebay have blocked me from doing so.

Do you know Brian, I have been a member of Ebay for many years, this is my third username. It has been a while since I advertised on Ebay, I stopped and moved to Ebid due to the 20% charges taken from me between Ebay and PayPal, an Ebay company. I came back because I wanted to advertise this car in as many places as possible. I will not be coming back to sell again. Ebay has been ruined over the years by corporate profiteering and over zealous regulation. It will eventually be the downfall of the company as others fill the void that the OLD Ebay has left.

In fairness to them, if they allowed people to edit titles/descriptions after a bid has been placed, people would take the piss.

I was pretty sure you COULD change the title for a short period after listing (ditto prices) tho??

But it was THEIR auto-generated title that overwrote my own. It was incorrect and I tried to correct it immediately. Just because some numpty trader placed a low bid as soon as it was live in the hope that he would get a bargain - I am screwed.

Cancel their bid. IIRC go to the bids placed page and there is an option to cancel bids at the bottom.

Well constant "what car" threads are a bit annoying when the answer is always an MX5 but I can live with that. The rant quality overall is definately going downhill not enough variation in the swearing but no Paul just right now it ebay threads that get on my wick when they don't even classify as a good rant.

I'm confused - you ignored all of the options to preview your ad before posting it, and went ahead with the incorrect title, and this is Ebay's fault?

You should be grateful they offer you a listing fee refund if you relist and sell the item.

PS the only tenuous link to motoring in the thread was you were trying to sell a car - had it been anything else I'd have pressed the report button to get it moved out of general gassing to somewhere more suitable - maybe the bin but I'm sure it would have gone to household and gardening

I'm pretty sure there's a chance to finally check before it goes live, even though ebay auto-populates. I suspect that annoying as this (and ebay generally) is, this one is your fault.

After a 20 second experience I find my self wiping the blood from my a$$ and pulling my pants up as Mr Ebay leaves the room with a smile on his face and £30 in his pocket. Should have stuck to Pistonheads....

So my reg number based on previous owners car - so this is a recently purchased reg plate that was transfered from another car and not only that but despite the 90% of all bids on ebay arrive in the last 5 mins Dad go a bid on it in 20 Secs........... Sheesh by a lottery ticket Dad

No. The number was on my wife's TVR until she sold the car 2 months ago and I transferred it to my car. However, I have my eyes on a 997GT2 so my car is for sale but the numberplate is not included. The dealer who bid on my car did so within 20 seconds of me realising the error. Whilst I have sold many times on Ebay, this was my first attempt at listing a car so I thought it would be useful to share my poor experience with fellow PH members. Yes, perhaps I should buy a lottery ticket but frankly I do not need to and we all know it is just a way of taxing the poor, desperate or simply delusioned.
