Some lowlife helped themselves to the RNS-E sat-nav and audio unit from my Audi last night. frown

By the power of Google I've found OEM Retrofits in Bradford who look like they will supply and fit a replacement. Has anyone dealt with them or have any suggestions for alternative suppliers ?

My brother-in-law had a similar pleasure a few months ago (LS8). Two days after getting a replacement it got nicked again.

frown That's not good but thanks for the warning. Mine was on that side of Leeds too.

Easier and cheaper to buy a used unit and fit it yourself I think?

Simple to do as all wiring/GPS antenna is already in place.

On speaking to OEM Retrofits (very helpful) and to the police it seems that there is a hotspot of built-in sat-nav and audio theft in north east Leeds. If that's the case I might not bother replacing it and just go for a cheap and cheerful radio until the thieves get caught (or move on).

Sorry to hear about the theft.

Easiest way is to buy one off the net... only issue is that kind of feeds the demand of thefts.....

I have fited them before so if you need any help I'd be willing to help.

Thanks for the offers of help gentlemen, that's much appreciated. thumbup

After a lot of head scratching and calculating we've decided to 1) go through an insurance claim and 2) find somewhere much safer to park the car.

The police are treating these incidents as a high priority as they are so rife i.e giving them significantly more attention than they would normally for a vehicle crime. A policeman we spoke to said he was about to call another victim whose built-in sat-nav had been stolen for the FIFTH time frown

A gang from lithuania have just been caught here in Norway nicking Sat Nav's, they were also nicking motorbikes too. They would take them back to lithuania.

That's interesting. And funnily enough a lot of the sat-navs on Ebay are marked as shipping from Lithuania...

An insurance claim for that? I guess you have protected NCD then?

I bought my last RNS-E for £350 so they aren't that expensive these days.

(Not every secondhand one is stolen - plenty come from written off cars and others come from the factory after reconditioning, hence the eastern European connections for some of them)

There was damage to the door and the lock was pulled out which made the difference.

Hi,

I've just had mine done. They're not stealing to order. They're stealing for the satellite chip inside the system. They're smashing the unit up purely for this chip as someone has found a way of using the chip within a Sky + or Sky HD box as a way of getting all the subscribed channels for free.

Sky need to do something about it but they wont. Same thing is happening to VW and Skoda's that have the same system.

Its happening all over the country now.

The Sky comment has been around since the dawn of time. There's no circuitry inside a stereo, GPS unit etc etc etc that can decrypt any encrypted TV system (I've worked in the industry for the last 6 years, working for companies who do the security for Virgin Media, and lately Sky).

It started off with Ford stereos being nicked (6006/6006e 6 disk in dash used to be nicked all the time as it would fit pretty much any Ford). I guess they've moved onto VAG kit due to the popularity of the models these days and the fact that a unit will fit any other models.

It was even before that, I remember Ford Escort / Orion radio cassette units being nicked for the "Sky chip".

Since this thread has been resurrected...

I no longer have the A4 but does anyone know if the TT (current or older models) uses the same "help yourself" removable sat-nav set-up ?
