I'm off for a weekend away in Cardiff, and as a young driver its only my second long journey, first was to Nottingham and to be honest I'm worried about the drive. As its new roads i will not be speeding but of course there is always the chance that i could be caught out or stray above the limit. I dont want to be speedo watching so i was wondering if anyone would be able to tell me what the journey from London --- Cardiff is like in respect of Camera's / Mobile Camera's?? Any hotspots i should look out for??

Cheers in advance ladies and gents.

The severn bridge is quite a hotspot these days so worth sticking to the limit around there, apart from that the m4 is usually quite clear up to cardiff, however watch all the time for brake lights comming on ahead in the middle and outer lanes around bends. in South Wales it appears that all our accident hotspots are just around motorways bends

Around Newport be aware of the road as it changes from 3 to 2 to 3 lanes quiet freqently and the limit does go down to a permamnant 50 in a couple of places, but very few people go much less than 70, I personally have never seen scameras here, but have seen an unmarked or two pulling people around there.

Cheers

Thanks mate, am i right in thinking its £4.60 to enter your lovely country?? I'll probably just stick to a limit of say 80 on the motorway, hope that if its a camera i can just slow down in time and that unmarked cars leave me alone.

Thanks again.

Ben - sticking to 80 should see you through most of the way. But as Gopher published: watch it around the Severn Bridge...especially just afterwards as you enter Wales.

You'll see signs saying "Croeso y Cyrmu" which roughly translated means 'motorists must pay'.

Keep and eye out round Reading Jns 10-12 as TVP often have a car there during peak times.
Similarly, round Swindon Jns 15-16 is another hotspot and Wiltshire seem to be having a bit of a crackdown between Jns 16-17 the last few weeks, as the holiday traffic gets worse (at least they are leaving commuter times alone...).

Traffic is likely to be heavy at the M4/M5 junction and the whole of the Brstol motorway network is covered by CCTV from Jn 19 onwards. If you go on to the BBC website www.bbc.co.uk/bristol, they have live feeds from the cameras.

Have a good journey!

Have you considered boycotting the south wales economy, as a motorist you clearly are an unwelcome kiddy killer? I live less than 8 miles from the severn bridge and haven't crossed it for over 5 months now. As far as I am concerned the place has fallen into the atlantic.

Is it that bad now?

I left in '92 and there were 3 traffic light cameras and no speed cameras in the entire city.

Cheers lads, looks like im going to stick to the speed limits as my insurance is already very high and 3 points wont help matters. Thanks for the advice and has all been noted on my directions. My girlfriend is on camera patrol and MUST get topless if we get pulled up. Reckon it will work??

Thanks again.

< goes to apply for a job with the BiB >

As said keep eyes peeled, look at all the bridges on M4 as it has been known for them to hide behind signs
If driving down A48M you will find a camera towards the end near the hospital (cant remember where as i havent been down that way for a while) but i think that goes down to a 30 or 40 zone.

Good luck

Remember the flak JC got when he put took wales off the map on his show.

Bloody inspirational I call that now. Wales has indeed fallen off the map as far as I am concerned. No offence to the Welshies, but Wales can go itself. I hope the economy withers and dies and tourists refuse to visit any more. Rhyl is shit anyway!

Good, everyone leave Wales or don't come here. Leaves some of the best driving roads in the UK for us.

South Wales is no worse than anywhere else in this country but not as bad as the north (according to public opinion and the press) South Wales has got its reputation from Rally GB which is justified IMO! Mobile cameras go out in force once a year and everybody cries 'Scammers'. Of course they come out all year but not all concentrated in Cardiff and Swansea.
Dont forget inbetween the north and south we have 'Mid Wales' with a lot of untouched roads for our pleasure, so the more you english think our country is out to get you the more open our best roads will stay
